Raff helped me yank it out. I pulled off many of the periferals prior. Made a mess on the shed floor. When will I learn?

As above - you've gone to the trouble of yanking it - get it re-bored or sleeved and new bearings - rebuild head etc - then you are home and hosed for the next 150,000 for motor at least - will go heaps better as well.

Or look out for a re-built one but then you never know if it's done right or not.

I’ve got a ported head here but it is off a 202 so non adjustable rockers. I’ve had this setup before and was happy with it, whereas some prefer the earlier setup. It’s an open chamber head. Other option is a 161 H head could get ported, larger valves. But really just want it to be quiet, reliable with a slight lope and sound nice. I do want to get away from the 179 head so I can run water heated manifold and heater via separate circuits.

Decided to go with the 179 for a few reasons. I think it will be a better motor as it has had a relatively short life in front of a hydramatic. Pistons and bores look good and I'm hoping to get away with hone and linsh.

So I've bitten the bullet and lodged a request to change engine numbers. No inspection required apparently they check if the engine is on their database and is compatible. Worst case scenario they will require me to upgrade brakes to duo servo EJ. I have a couple of HR front ends, one drum, one disc. Watch this space.

Driver side deal is still a work in progress. I have 2.75 ice cream sticks jammed between glass edge and seal face. Make sure you focus on sticking down the forward facing longer bit in the section.

Dropped disassembled 179 to Lonsdale engines for a measure up. They didn't like the old pistons so may go out to 3 5/8" std 186. Plan is to get it decked and balanced. The thought struck me I should give them the flywheel to machine and balance I don't know. Not going to be revving it hard.....

But it seems a shame to bore a block out 1/16". Surely it must be possible to get oversize 179 pistons.

Oversize pistons for 179 are apparently hard to obtain for the very reason that standard procedure is to bore to 186 Rob. The moulds were identical so there is plenty of wall thickness. Anyway I will be guided by the workshop.

While engine is out I will pull the rear springs and try my lowered sedan springs. Managed to get the front pins out fairly easily using combination of Patrick’s G-clamp method with 1 1/8” socket over the head, plus some impact. Got the clamp up as tight as I could, which wasn’t enough to get the pins moving. A few taps with mash hammer on the end of my F style clamp while under compression did the job. No penetrant, heat or sawing required. Rear nuts came with combination of cheater bar on socket handle on one side, and on the passenger side where the exhaust prevented me using a socket, was able to use my foot to push on crescent end of combination spanner.
