Had a few of these kicking around so thought I would have a go at cleaning them up


First up , knock all the powdery crap out and bung them in the oven when the boss wasn’t home to separate the tins from the bodies - thanks to Ardiesse for the tip


Then drop them in a citric acid mix for 24 hours


This is how they came out



I then hit them with a green scouring pad for a minute or so , this is also an excellent way of finding any cuts on your hands .....


Rinsed them off and gave them a squirt of WD40 , reckon I will beadblast the bodies at work then send them over to that brake joint in Adelaide to have them sleeved and they should be good to go , the tins I will send to my nephew in Sydney who does paint less dent removal

I used 75 grams of citric acid powder that I bought from woolies for about
$2 in 2 litres of warm water.

I'm 'in love' with Citric Acid!

I used to use stinky molasses but CA is way better, and no bad odour near the back door.

I have a 200L bucket permanently filled and there is always something hanging in the acid bath

Whats the process with it? Soak for how long?
Neutralize with something after rinsing?
Does it work on alloy as well as steel? Other metals? What kind of mixture strength?

Steel needs at least one day, then pressure wash or Scotchbrite cleanup. If still some rust put back and repeat until satisfied.

I haven’t had huge success with alloy, and I wouldn’t leave pot metal badges etc in there. It works best on ferrous oxide, dirt and some paint, I think enamel, but not acrylic, epoxy, urethane etc.

Neutralise with clean water. It is nontoxic. Basically lemon juice. Stings your skin slightly when fresh. Turns the rust into a chelate of iron which is excellent for plant absorption, so I put the used liquid on my fruit trees.

I use about one heaped cup of crystals to a bucket of clean water.

Light surface rust appears very soon if you don’t immediately dry and deoxedine it,or spray thoroughly with wd40 etc.
