Made me smile when you opened the boot, and it was chockas with engine internals. Carting people and gear around is what they were made for... the purists may frown though

Stretched the new legs with a putt to coffee and cars at McLaren Vale, followed by a run to Victa and Middleton. Punters were lined up outside Port Elliot bakery 50 metres down the road.

Back from surf trip with old mate pete. Small puddle under diff. Need a new brass washer is hopefully all it is.

While under measured pinion angle which is pointing down 3 degrees. Spring plates are down 6 degrees. Tailshaft up 6 degrees. Engine is up of course, 3 degrees, and manifold down 1 degree. This would account for some vibration at speed and is far from ideal. I haven't touched the rear suspension, other than changing shocks. Completely standard 6 leaf diff springs. I'm going to play around with it after all Holden day, lower springs, new bushes and align the pinion.

Now I've had another look i think it is the pinion oil seal leaking. Never had one leak before and never bothered to change one. When i drained the old diff there wasn't much oil in it.

Hi clay,

Don't worry about anything relating to pinion angle other than gearbox angle to level, then diff flange face angle to level.

For example the end of the box to level is 3 degrees then the diff should be at 4 degrees to level to allow for spring wind up when its loaded with acceleration torque.(diff wants to climb)

I just did a lifted patrol where my mate has 3 foolscap pages of calculations, Its all about the level I said. Anyway measured and adjusted with upper control arm kit, no more vibration.

I measured drivelibe axis which is pointing up forward 3 deg. That's about right, manifold being level just confirms that.

Diff flange should therefore be 4 deg up, but I measure 3 deg DOWN. Therefore needs to be corrected 7 degrees!

Flange came off easy.

Diff pinion axis inclined 3 degrees down? I'm somewhat skeptical.

Raid a mirror ball for a facet, blu-tack it onto the front face of the pinion. Cut a 1" hole in a white cardboard sheet, and put the card over the gearbox mainshaft. Centre a laser pointer on the mainshaft's axis, and aim the beam at the mirror. Mark the position of the reflected spot on the card.

Yeh nah, I haven’t got easy access to all that high tech equipment rob, however your skepticism is well founded. With the tail shaft pulled I can compare diff and gearbox seal faces, and they are within 1 degree, phew. Faith restored in gmh design and build.

I hot rodded the pinion flange.
Retensioned the nut to 80lbft rather than 120. Added some of this

Took Elle on a test run to Willunga Farmers Market. It is only a half me from our door so went on to Wirra Wirra for lunch. Diff still quiet and no longer leaking

good job Clay ... yeah, I've been known to use nulon's smooth shift ... last time I wasn't able to get it so I ended up with penrite's shift eze - same sort of thing with teflon (PTFE)

hey, while you are hot rodding - do you want these brackets? looks like my ute had tramp rods at some stage
