I thought I would break up the greys and blacks inside the ute

so I sealed off all of the holes in the door

I spent most of the morning sorting spares into tubs - then it got to 34 degrees so I stopped. There's been a cool change this arvo, so I just put the mirrors on - found a spot where the mount follows the body contour and the quarter windows don't hit them

more minor tinkering

I put in a new battery that I picked up at one of the 30% off sales ... luckily the battery hold down was in one of the spares boxes that came with the ute ... while I was at it I made up an extra earth (to the body) ... and put in a new positive cable that was left over from a previous project

the original ignition tumbler was seized and I wasn't even sure the key in the spares box was the correct one ... I freed it up a fair bit but it was still notchy and would catch unless you pushed downwards on the (only) key - I thought about getting a new key cut and trying it out ... but in the end, for $35 I just picked up a new tumbler with 2 keys)

I found a puddle under the ute - I had recently put water in the washer bottle - the pump was leaking past the impeller and through the motor ... just an o-ring but the whole thing was brittle so I decided to pick up a 'universal' one - $26 for a complete kit (although the barb on the bottom of the bottle is part of the 2 piece mould and unless you smooth it out a hose won't seal on it)

Hi Stephen,

yeah, the door cards that were on the ute were rubbish. I did consider re using the vinyl but because it had been detached here and there for who knows how long it had shrunk (and it was torn anyway) ... I used a bit of each of the old cards to make most of a template and did the rest freehand

the door cards are made from 3.2mm white masonite painted the same colour as the wheels (colonial red) ... I didn't want to put too many new holes in the door so at the moment they are held on by seven screws with painted plastic caps - EK doors are reasonably flat but once you've screwed the door card in at the front and back to follow the shape it bows a bit and needs a couple at the top and one at the bottom ... I've got a cardboard template marked with the positions of all of the old holes and door contours so the card doesn't need to come off if in time it needs more screws (eg. the door handle spring is pretty strong)

I thought I'd give this a go and if I didn't like them it's something that is easily replaced ... anyway for about $20 in materials a piece they need to earn their keep for a bit longer

so far I like them

I wasn't going to do anything on the ute today ... the vinyl (headlining?) under the rear window has bothered me since I put it in - it seems to change (wrinkle, bubble, twist) with the weather ... perfect job to attack when you aren't going to do anything.


so I cut a piece of carpet to slide under the window rubber
