Serious leakage rear main seal. Considering options but something has to be done. !!!!!!!!!!!

Out it comes Clay, the only way to fix it, 1 step forward 2 steps back !!

Looks great though.

The kids don’t like my FB sedan sloppy shift... it’s like stirring a bowl of porridge. Didn’t realise until I drove Graces ute what a difference the bushes make.

Shame about the rear main, but a lot easier now before the front panels go on.

Cheers,

Got a momentum going now. Things are really progressing. Rear main doesnt seem to be dripping as much so maybe the seal has soaked up som oil and swolen up or something. This motor needs a decent run to de-coke.
Shopping list, tube of chassis grease, 50mm exhaust clamps, bars-leaks (that still a thing?), carby kit. Oh and ring vintage wiring and obsolete rubber and hurry them up.

Got the shopping done and gave the carb a tear down and thorough clean. Looked to have had a new accelerator pump plunger in it recently so that wasn’t the problem. Pulled out all the valves except the main jet which I don’t have the tool for. Back on the car and still has a bit of a stagger off idle though not as bad. Flooring from idle causes stall with backfire.

Timing at 7deg btdc, richened up the idle. The accelerator pump pin went back in the middle hole and getting a pretty good clean squirt hitting the centre Venturi body.

I’m wondering about the vacuum advance now although it does seem like severe lean out. Might try blanking the advance port. I had to instal a tube to get ported vacuum and may be tapping the wrong spot. The backfiring might be symptomatic of this.

Otherwise, could try moving the pump pin to the outer hole on the throttle lever so it gets more fuel when jabbed.

I used to set the timing by light, then run up and down the road advancing the timing till it pinged, backed it off slightly from that. Vacuum advance and plunger squirt are very important for the flat spot.

Yes Greg, same with the timing. I got my timing light when I had the HK, which I sold in 1982. Still works, but sporadic. Also with the radiator so close to the fan it is hard to see the marks. I can’t drive on the street yet so no tune by ear. May be getting the wrong vacuum signal. Tomorrow.....

Not much time this week but rang vinwire and loom should be here next week with luck.

Keeping an eye on oil leakage, seems to be limited to acceptable amounts from rear main and gear selector shaft.Image

Clay’s Wedgewood Blue FB Ute

Post by Errol62 »

I bought a replacement front handbrake cable on eBay in November 2018. Pulling the handbrake on quite firmly but gradually tonight, I would say maybe 300N if that, and it let go suddenly. The swaged ball has let go. I can pull it out and fix or replace and it was only $25 from memory. Lesson learnt? I don’t know but can’t have been much force used to swage the ball on. I’ve done a bit of wire balustrading around home and it’s supposed to be tensioned to 1000N.

I will see if I can get in touch with the seller. Imagine if it happened in an emergency situation.

Yeh parrently statute of limitations has expired and eBay won’t play ball. It’s annoying having to pull it out and re-do is the main thing.

Clay,
Your handbrake problem sounds very familiar :(

When you fix it can you post up some pictures so I know where to reattach mine in the rear wheel (after I make some new ends)? In the meantime I will continue to carry a block of wood to chock the rear wheel. Thanks
Stephen

It failed at the other end Stephen, the ball in the end of the handle.
