The rules for reinforcing plates are covered in NCOP. There is also some additional information in VSB5B (the National Code of Practice Standards Bulleting 5B Construction and Installation of Additional Seats by Individuals). The NCOP guidance on reinforcing plates requires:
• the plates to be made of mild steel,
• the surface area of the plates must not be less than 3,750mm2 and have a thickness of 3-4.5mm (1/8-3/16”). VSB5B allows not less than 75mm x 50mm x 3mm (3750mm2), but requires the plates to be no thicker than 4mm,
• the plates must be contoured to fit the vehicle body,
• the plates must have a minimum 5mm corner radius with the plate edges closest to the body chamfered.
• the bolts used must be 7/16” UNF SAE Grade 8.

The engineers requirement for 100x150 give you 15,000mm2... that is waaaaay larger than the 3,750mm2 required by either NCOP or the VSB. In reality, it is not the dimensions that matter, more the surface area (more area = less pressure on the pillar - less likely to pull through the pillar). To get that surface area in the B-pillar, you will need a long, thin plate with a nut in the middle. I used these for the FB, but only to a 3,750mm2 surface area.

Good to hear your back into it fingers !

Look at page 17 and 18 in the below link it shows how I done mine. The front belts inside mount closest to the tunnel I incorporated with the seat mounts. Page 19 shows the rears that I borrowed from a Torana.

My apologies to the Engineer , I misunderstood or didn't hear correctly he said 100mm x 50mm plates and a captive nut . same for the seat mounts . Anyways out to the shed and get started .....oh by the way did you guys get told the seat belts are to be all retractable including the middle rear ......got the seat belts yesterday they are APV 00 - 00 type inertia reel and the rear are parcel shelf mounted .. Thanks again , I will put some photos up as I go .....Fingers

They told me that for my 57 so I just put in 4 belts and will licence it as a 4 seater.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

I put retractables in the four outer positions, and lap belts in the two centre positions.

NCOP is silent with respect to retractable vs. fixed belts for our pre-ADR vehicles. It does however require that any replacement or additional seatbelt should be new and comply with Australian Standard 2596 (Seatbelt Assemblies for Motor Vehicles) - not sure of the content of that AS.

In NSW, the RMS publishes Vehicle Standard Information (VSI) sheets in addition to requiring NCOP compliance. The current VSI6 is silent on lap-belts, other than requiring engineering where a lap-belt is replaced with a lap-sash belt. From memory, the old VSI6 required retractable belts only on the outboard positions.

Hey fingers,

Good stuff and I don't mind you copying the design at all, its good to know there are engineers out there who are logical.
