Easy to check - take the fuel cap off and run it. Might be the case if the late model cap is sealed to run through a vapour recovery canister.

It does not need much of a vent - my wagon has 400 ponies sucking through a standard EK fuel cap vent hole.

I take the point re the cap and I am going to check today I do have the vapour recovery canister that is standard in the early commodores, I have to run it as part of engineering requirements as it is deemed pollution control.
I don't think I'm sucking a vacuum in the tank but at this point I'm not discounting anything, I really think it is not a big problem just something I'm not seeing

So I fitted the second fuel pump and Frank seems to be a little more behaved starts and idles relatively well.

I still have Frank on car stands after fitting the pump otherwise I would have given him a test run instead I started him Sunday morning and put him into gear forward and reverse with my foot on the brake normally this would make the revs drop right down and I would have to flutter the go pedal a little to keep it running but this time the revs just dropped down to about 800-850 and keep running, not sure if it has solved it but I feel more optimistic, wont really know until I try a test drive but still on the standard Delco  and need to program my fuel gauge properly which is hard to do by yourself.

Well finally found somebody that is going to be able to tune Frank, the guy talks in EFI Sorcery and really seems to know what he is talking about, I sent him the engine specks and he says he now knows why I have only 5" of vacuum and why it keeps stalling, he says the cam is quite big and therefore the reasons behind the issues, the stalling is due to the standard torque converter I had fitted, the standard converter gets bogged down by the engine or too much pressure on it as Ryan says so he is having a High Stall converter custom made for the setup, looks like it is going to be $1200 - $1300 but this will make it driveable and therefore able to be tuned.
And to tune it they are going to brake into the standard Delco apparently this is the way to go now.
All going well Frank will go to Ryan' shop sometime in the last week of May and have the converter fitted and hopefully then tuned, the only other issue that Ryan raised was that he thinks the 3.08 diff ratio is not going to be right and suggested that we change it to 3.7's, I'm going to wait ans see how it drives first before changing diff gears that will also allow me to save a bit more money as the converter and tuning are going to chew up a bit I think.
Clay your luck you have received you tonno my replacement on left eastern states on the 6th was supposed to be delivered by yesterday at the latest and now saying delayed, great AusPost at its best.

That sounds odd. Normally the standard convertors are around 1500-1800rpm stall speed (the point where they lock up). Nowhere near idle speed. Should idle merrily with little interference from the convertor.

Yep that is odd.

The only thing I can take from that is he is going to increase the idle and use more stall in the torque converter to stop the motor pushing the car forward.

Keep us posted Neil

Lumpy motor generally requires a higher idle and hence higher stall not that I know much about it. Sounds like he knows what he is doing Neil.

Thanks for the thoughts.
Yes Frank does idle ok and is a little higher at 1000 - 1100 rpm the trouble is when it is in gear and with your foot on the brake it just wants to keep turning the rear wheels and does in the gravel outside my home workshop  and once it gets warm and you really have your foot on the brake it will load up and stall I suppose because the plugs start to get fowled up.
I am really hoping he knows his stuff otherwise it is going to cost me money and be a waste.

I will keep everyone posted.

Sounds like he’s going to put in a 3500-3700 stall for that money.

If it doesn’t work, you can just push it onto the lawn as a garden ornament :ninja22:

Actually GPI I think that is what he said 3500 to 3700 if it copmes to the engine not wanting to play the game I will pull it and put a standard engine in, I have a couple spare   if I had of done that originally Frank would be registered by now

Thanks to Dave at Tonnos n Stuff I received my replacement tonno last Monday and Keith and I completed fitting it yesterday.
Really happy with the way it looks I always liked the flat look of Blacky's, we got it as tight as we could and I'm going to let it relax for awhile and then maybe adjust the height of the centre bow.

Went and saw Ryan at RJM Custom Auto Friday afternoon when I got back from sea, he showed me the new torque converter, Frank is going to his workshop Wednesday morning to have the converter fitted and then tuned   hopefully all is going to go ok, can't wait to see how it drives
