A quick update.

Picked up the wagon up from the engineer yesterday. The proportioning valve had been screwed all the way in (all bias to the front brakes). Once he had screwed it midway, all was good. It's passed its tests now, with the exception of brake pedal effort and noise. The pedal effort is around 600N, and should be 300N. System has plenty of suck, but pedal effort does not decrease with the booster disconnected.

Took the wagon around to Burt Brothers. One thing I had not picked up is that if you sit there with your foot on the brake, the brake pump kicks in and does not stop running. Looks like it has a torn diaphragm. Back home again, and pulled out the booster. It was a damn sight easier putting it in before some idiot mounted everything else in the way  . Left the master hanging in the breeze, though remembered to put some tape around the end of it... there is nothing stopping the master piston dropping out on the XA/B/C Falcons :egeek: .

Changed cars, took the booster back over to Burt Bros and got there before they closed at midday. Busy morning.

Spent the afternoon pulling apart Number One Sons VL. What was described as slight brake noise turned out to be a locked front wheel, a pad with no meat left on it, and a rotor that has been eaten on the inboard face. Piston popped out of the caliper, and outer seal damaged. Looks like new pads, caliper rebuild and new rotors.

Cheers,
Harv

Sounds like you’re on to it Harv. As to sons car, well at least you won’t be lonely or bored in your old age.

That's pretty good news Harv,

The simplest things are sometimes the easiest to start with or fix, don't worry I've been there before !!

I bought a Smokey RX4 look alike 4 cylinder for a great price once, I had full intention of a rotary engine conversion and drove it around until the gearbox stopped working ?????? It was an auto checked the fluid and there is none, filled it up off we go again. A few months later no drive again, WTF ! Checked the fluid all gone again, looked underneath no leaks ?????????? Then in caught my eye, a vacuum tube that goes to the gearbox via a diaphragm modulator, that bugger was split and the motor was sucking all the transmission fluid into it off acceleration. Seriously $24 later and the thing went like a rocket, good quick gear changes and not a whisper of smoke. Needless to say I sold the thing for a hansom profit !!!!!!

It would be interesting after your find if you still need the vacuum pump ???????

For Sale: brake pad, suit VL Commodore. One careful owner, only driven on weekends. May need rebuild before use. Will trade for a blown H4 bulb, or stripped 10mm bolt. Can supply matching rotor for extra. Wiling to help with delivery (as far as I can throw it). No offers, no time wasters.

I'll swap you a set of broken grey motor piston rings. Or three-fifths of a fibre timing gear.

That sounds like a deal... I think I have the other two fifths of the timing gear to make a set.

Got the VH151 booster back from Burt Brothers. They found a torn diaphragm (yay! that explains the lack of boost). Didn't get a chance to get it back in the car though... next time I'm home.

Awesome job from Burt Bros - same day turnaround.

Got home late last night, and up early. Got the booster back in after swearing at the clevis pin for a while. Took it out to the engineer, and it has passed the pedal effort test. He reckons they are not the best brakes in the world, but they are compliant.

Drove it home again, and got the weighbridge ticket on the way home. Only thing outstanding now is noise (still too loud), and the blue slip. Looks like January rego (maybe February), all going well.

Cheers,
