The 173 blue blocks were cast the same as a 202 block but they were only bored to 173 so you can keep the wall thickness up to help keep the pistons on the inside,and they are the only small motor with the same size main journals as a 202 crank

No it got bored lots to fit the Chrysler pistons and is 204 and still has good wall thickness tested a few blocks and most failed before finding this one

Yeah they are a good thing! And msd are making some good bits to put into them, that one has a blaster coil and a HEAT module with rev limiter.. but we will see how it works on the dyno next week.. before I say to muchImage

Bit of engine porn there gledge :eh: :eh: bet you cant wait for the figures.

The first engine upgrade I did in my FC Sedan was a 186 that I picked up cheap in Sydney, I believe it was originally an X2 engine, it came twin carbs and an opal 4 speed and all the other gear to just put it in the car.
When I got it back to the mates workshop I pulled the head and too my surprise found it was bored .030" and had been stroked, measurements worked out that it was a 208, after some research at the time I found that a company called Better Built used to make these engines but that was all I could find.
Anyway moral of this story; man I could not kill that engine it took everything I could throw at it and asked for more and would go at it all day.

I look forward to seeing the dyno outcome.

Imageonly got a few minor pulls in before the dyno shit itself but we did get 235lbft and 200 hp but didn’t get to rev it over 5500 rpm or get to put any timing in it.. pretty much just got to bed the cam in and a couple of small pulls to bed in the rings.. but plenty to comeImageImage

Cool - what is the cost of dyno time or is it at mates rates ? I would like to get mine on one when it goes together but have no idea of the cost .... block is on the engine stand and hopefully it will be going together in the next few weeks.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

It aint cheap.

I got a quote to build the 327 for the wagon 10 years ago. Engine dyno tuning was $1000/day.
When I had the 327 built for the wagon a year or so ago (different bloke to the quote above), it was (engine) dyno tuned by the builder. Cost $1000.
I had Number One Son's VL dyno tuned recently by yet another dyno company. The new head and cam had thrown the fuel map way off, and it struggled to idle. It needed the ECU removed, the chip removed (desoldered from the board) and a socket soldered back in to insert a programmable chip. The new chip gets the old fuel map, then the map is updated via the chassis dyno. Cost $1200.

In theory it costs $400 to set it all up on the dyno and then$1000 for the dyno session but we played around with it for two days before the dyno gave up and we probably still have another day to go after it gets repaired! But as far as running the engine in you can’t beat the engine dyno.. first we pumped the 5.8 litres of oil through the engine via a sandwich plate between the oil pump and the filter using an accumulator and then you can run it up at your 2000rpm to bed the cam in and keep load on it to bed the rings in and all while you are there watching closely for oil leaks etc.... it is a fair bit of money but then again it is a expensive engine also

ImageImageImageImage just been playing around building crank trigger brackets to suit the hall affect pick up as I decided to abort the use of the delco dizzy and try the new MSD 6al.2 programable box.. so tomorrow’s the day of truth on the dyno and see if it all worksImage

Where did you get your trigger setup from ? It looks heaps better made than mine
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

I made it myself mate and if it all works today I’m going to get them
Drawn up and try and duplicate them on the cnc mill ImageI really wasn’t impressed with the other sonic setup
