Reddo, The 5 speed sounds the Go. Slave cylinder adapters available at rares. gives you that nice cachunga chunga feel clutch that all oldies have but alot more shifting in traffic! Bloody nice on the open road.

Yo again..
Just talking to a mechanic here at work. Apparently ya can use a datto 120y brake booster and master cylinder. Just unbolt your clutch master and bolt the jappo booster/master cyl straight on. They are only small and will fit next to your brake master without too many mods.
Apparenetly you have to run a seperate vacumn line from your inlet manifold. Law doesnt like you teeing off your brake booster vac hose.

If this is the case it would be cheaper and easier than buyiong a VH40 or 44 and trying to find somewhere to mount it. Never been keen on boosters under mudgaurds. Pretty harsh environment under there.

Having said all that the 5 speed is still an option.
would mean welding in a auto tunnel from a powerglide HD/HR or something similar. I thought by the time Holden got to HR they would be making all tranny humps "Auto size"... didnt happen until later years.

I remember those 120Y brake boosters from all those years ago. From memory they were only about 8 inch diameter or so.Trouble is finding a 120Y in a wrecking yard nowdays.

Heading off to local wreckers in next few days, if I find a 120Y Reddo, I'll let you know.

Terry.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Hi Reddo,
that's good - thanks. It may be worth your while to look at Burson's if you can't find one at a wreckers - up market wreckers call themselves dismantlers down here - my how we have evolved....... still wreckers in my opinion.

I fitted a hadfield trans cover to mine - it became a really good fit.
Gives oodles of room around the box and wasn't too hard to fit in.
Had to do a fair bit of teasing the metal to find a new home.
Placed the new hump in place, marked it out and cut undersize.
Gently hammered both to fit then drilled and pop-riveted into place.
Finall hammering and just a few more pop rivets until happy.
Then Migged each hole after drilling out the pop-rivet-
Finished off with a full seam weld inside and stiched outside........
I am led to believe the cover is simialr to an EK auto but am not totally convinced - think this one is much larger...............

Think the 120-Y servo assist booster is a better option than using a VH 40 or 44. I like the idea of having a "mechanical" backup if you loose vacuum - it's just me.

Have an FJ ute in progress which has the Celica 5, 186 and associated gear - am very much looking forward to retirement to getting this vehicle on the "take out" list.

Have a member of our club here with an FB with a hot 186, Celica 5 and 3:08 diff - have been in this car a number of times and it's a treat. Think it is a great combination using those components - easy to drop down the diff demand a bit if it's too tall.......... there are many to find the "sweet" spot.

Keep us up to date with what is happening.

Rosco as far as the CRS tunnels go, I believe they are pretty much the same size, excluding the bracing on the inside. I used one in my EK to clear the trimatic and I also fitted standard Auto carpet from Knox. The only mods made was to heat up the molded carpet where it had been made to clear the bracing as mine was underneath.

Reddo how can you go past a 5 speed conversion, great for the open road and by the sounds of it a much lighter clutch...

Hi
The 5 speed project has been on the backburner since i bought the green EK ute with the sedan lights grafted into the back.3 years ago ( since sold and now living at Coodgee beach)
I feel like i have been pedalling a pushbike flat out without a chain on lately. Going flat out and getting nowhere.

Always something else to that has a higher priority... well at least in SWMBO eyes anyway.

I should get the box into a transmission joint and at least get it overhauled so that if and when i find time to tackle the installation everything will be ready to roll.

One day...

Thanks DR,
I took many pix of mine whilst fitting the cover - every time I turned my back on it - it seemed to get bigger...............
You are probably correct - if the carpet for an auto fits, then it can't be any bigger - smaller maybe, but not bigger.

I spent a week fabricating and "arch" to join the two halves of the central floor frame - I posted it to members in our club with the caption that it was similar in size and strength to that of an F1 lifting roll bar.......... it was an
"arch de triomph" the floor is welded into it and so too the rear trans upper mount - that area of the floor section is where I will be when they let a nuclear bomb off............

Thanks for the info - I have yet to do anything to finish of my interior - it is virtually as was from the '80's

Engine bay is just about done.......... still working on the exterior paintwork - only taken 7 years - so far and about 2/3rds of the way there.......... I love acrylic.............
