New balancer Wally, also ran the engine with the belt off and the vibe still existed.

The thrust plate doesn't feel smooth against either the cam of cam gear surfaces.
Hoping to get the sump off tomorrow to check all the bearings and look at the pistons.
Floats a little out but not unreasonable - factory spec 1.5-4 thou. Backlash is pretty high though - should be 3-4 thou. Was it line bored when cylinder overbore was done? Might have shifted the crank centreline away from the cam. Could be worse... could be too tight and you get the "supercharger whine" forever :( .

A bent fan can cause vibration, but it would need to be a pretty damn big bend in a grey motor. I've run a few that have been visibly "not quite right", with no real issue. When I fitted the Ross harmonic balancer to the FB, I had to notch the fan to clear. My notches are pretty agricultural (think bench grinder :oops: ), and again did little to cause noticeable vibration.

Yeah , you are right Craig there was problems with the ally timing gears . Needed to purchase a matching set back in the mid 80's or you could get caught out . I did :gasp:
The young bloke had an adjustable JP set on his black motor in his EK and due to being too tight in tolerances and valves kissing pistons ( at least we think that was the origin of problem ) the crank gear , we expect due to increased loading when the valves and pistons kissed , cracked between the threads and valley of the teeth . the whole thing let go , cracked the timing cover , managed to send the pieces back between the front main cap and sump , belted shit out of the sump . The cam ended up in three pieces , smashed lifters , bent push rods , bent valves . The end result was was a complete rebuild , new pistons which were machined to suit the needed clearances and everything replaced , which was really good as the motor had only about 4 or 5 hours on it prior to letting go from the complete new build it had before that to solve the problems from the complete rebuild it had before that as well .
Do the right thing and have a Professional do the builds ! Yeah , right ! Anyway it has left me feeling insecure as to the adjustable timing gear sets , have a close look at a crank gear next time you see a set and you will be surprised how little meat there is between the threads and the teeth .
I would rather work on a Morris 1100 than use a computer !!!!!!

Jesus you put the wind up me with all that damage! Don't think I'll have that problem hopefully!

mine is a billet steel Thomas gear. It rings like a bell when you tap it. Wrong type of material for a timing gear I reckon. I'm also suss on the helix angle as I have compared to others and by eye it looks different......well by my eyes anyway.

Pulled its pants and checked all bearings, clearances, and end float all ok.

All done now and back on the road. Replaced the billet steel gear and al the noise and vibration is gone. Just sorting a few little items but we are a definite ok for the Nats. :thumbsup:

Starting to get some reliability into the car since our timing gear set back. So far we've clocked 2733 miles with no major probs.
The odd squeak and rattle are starting to appear as is a few pesky oil leaks. The rear main appears to have taken up ok but I'm plagued a little with oil from the breather pipe and a gear selector leak. The breather leak maybe due to too much flow into the block from the oil filter return just below the breather pipe. The selector may be too much oil in the extension housing. I cant remember if I removed the steel deflector from the new rear bearing or not. Anyway the lots coming out again as my spigot bush is playing up when the engine warms right up so it'll be hopefully the last time touch wood!
Running wise it averaged 20mpg towing the boat to and from Renmark at 60mph (apart from the big hills!). I was running a 55 jet which was a little rich but on return I've fitted an adjustable jet and so far am achieving 26mpg.
Our latest trip was up through Tarra Bulga National Park.
