seized drum
Drove out in the EK yesterday and front right wheel locked up. Removed wheel and brake drum was seized. Took some time to release it but finally got it off. The brake cylinder was seized and full of rust.
Wondering what the best move is now. New cylinders or resleeve or what? I removed the other front cylinder and it was in similar condition.
We've had the EK since new and the brakes have never been touched, so it's not surprising they need attention.

You can get them resleeved with a stainless steel insert mate , one of the QLDers will chime in and let you know where to get them done , or maybe ask your local brake bloke .
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks. There's a brake and clutch place in Atherton and I'll see what they have to say today.

Wow, is this a one owner! Must be very low miles too. Its done real well for all these years and never had the brakes done, especially in Nth Qld with the high humidity. Any photo's of the car?deecee wrote:

All good. Cylinders are back and ready to be installed.
I notice the brake linings are not a matching pair. One lining does not extend the full length of the shoe. I thought a piece must have broken off at some stage, but I checked the other wheel and it's the same there. Are the linings on opposite shoes different??

No reply required. When all else fails look in the manual. I see the linings on the back shoe are about 50mm shorter than the ones on the front. So that's all OK.
Went to install the reconditiond wheel cylinders today but found that I can't get any fluid through the right hand brake hose. Must be a blockage somewhere. I guess I start removing lines now. Not quite sure what I'm doing.

Mate some people might be reluctant to reply to queries regarding brakes considering what could go wrong if things are misinterpreted and the end result on the road. Seriously if your not sure I would recommend that you get a mechanic or brake specialist to at least advise you as go along. Re the blockage, going on the age, and that you say the brakes have never been touched, I would be replacing all the hoses including the clutch hose. The hoses can look all good from the outside but can collapse internally under pressure causing the blockage as they get older.

I have every intention of getting the car to our mechanic in town, but at the moment it is not driveable with no brakes. I spoke to him about it and he said, as you did, that the flexible hoses will need replacing. He has known the car since new.
I have put things back together, but that seized drum will NOT go back over the shoes, no matter what I try. If I could get that on, I could drive it in with brakes on three wheels. Otherwise I'll have to look at a car trailer. That car has never been on a trailer.

Have you backed off the adjusters before trying to put the drum on? If they are new shoes have they been radius ground to suit the drum profile?

Yes, I have backed off the adjusters as far as they will go. I put a large clamp across the shoes to try to move them in further but the drum will not fit over the shoes. And it took me an afternoon and barked knuckles to get that retaining spring back on. The manual shows a special tool for fitting that but it's not detailed enough to enable me to make one.

Starting to definitely look like the hose for that wheel is totally stuffed. As Tim said undo the bleeder and see if that lets the shoes return.

OK, some better results today. That drum would not go on so I took everything apart again (including the bleed screw) and refitted the whole lot. The drum went on - just. Perhaps I had something wrong the first time. Anyway, the ute is now driveable again - albeit with nothing happening on the driver's side brake. Enough to get me to town so the mechanic can fit new hoses.
