Its Time to clean up the FB

Post by thomos60 »

G'day All,
I have made up my mind to give the FB a clean up.
I have been playing with the idea for a while now, going back and forth, but there is so many small things on the car that annoys me, on the other hand summer is coming and I really enjoy taking the car out.
Any way I have decided to give the FB a birthday.

On this forum I have read a lot of posts and there is a wealth of knowledge on here, and most of you guys have been there, and done it all, so I hope you all don't get sick of my silly questions.

The FB, its a NZ build.
I am the 4th owner. and have the contact details of 2, the original purchaser has passed away
The car has done 34000 miles

Silly question number 1, can these rubber flaps and the ones behind the tail light chrome (between the body) be purchased new? if so I would like to get coming.

The overall plan for the car is to restore and keep bog stock, understandably every bit of rubber on the car is rotten and needs to be replaced.

If any one has advise or comments on what not to touch, or certain parts which can not be sourced and must be retained please give me a heads up. all feedback is welcomed.

regards
Thomo.

Nice looking FB - if it were mine I would leave it as is , clean it up as much as possible and drive the wheels off it 8)

Those rubbers behind the bumper are not available as a repop, most just leave them off but yours look like they may clean up OK unless they are too dried out ?? I would give them a scrub with hand cleaner then soak them in baby oil .
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

She looks real nice, Thomo, and developing a nice "Patina". Good luck and have fun with the clean-up.

Just remember, as happens with lots of us, the more you dig the more you find to do and a few weeks/months clean-up can turn into a few years restoration. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it could be off the road longer than you initially expected

Cheers,

John

G'day All.
Just plodding along today taking off bits and pieces.
The photo is of no value, I just like the sticker cause its old.

G'day Daz, thanks a lot, I am sure we will catch up for a beer some time.

G'day Blacky, " to leave it as it is", that's exactly what I didn't want to hear, as I have been saying yes and no in my head for a while, but I have pulled the trigger and are going ahead. "Hand cleaner and baby oil" I like that idea if its OK for skin, then its got to be good for car parts which are delicate. cheers

G'day John, I have not set a time line, I just feel the car deserves it, out of all the old Holden's I have owned over the years, this it the only one, which has the original purchase papers, receipt's and service books, and the like. the car does not deserve an inch of shit caked on its underside, and ever so slowly rotting, there is some rust that needs attention. I am already at the stage of the more I dig the more I don't like, cheers

regards
Thomo.

that would have to be pretty close to the best original one about you would think, most here in NZ have a bunch more rot then that.
I would go down the clean it up as much as you can while leaving original road as much as you can if I were you, otherwise you are in for a ton of time and money to actually make it better then it already is.

Drivers Guard looks to have been replaced.
Just a couple of photos, the first photo of the sticker, the second photo is of the stickers location also showing some over spray.
I reckon it would have been nice, back in the day to phone up and request Nasco part #######, suppose we can all still do it now, but it would be for a VF.
