Gonna strip them both Mick and then make the call - the 138 is stock bore and turns over nice, the 149 is a ball of rust and is seized ......

Hey Blacky,
Why would they want disc brakes on the EK? It's still a 138 ci. Just paint it battleship grey and go in for a engine number change.
HQ's and LH Torana's had 202's and 4 wheel drum brakes.

STAY WITH GREY! Funny 2250 may rev freely but doesnt have Sideplate torque. I did the swap over 30 years ago into my EK with weld on engine mounting kit from Nepean Spares Springwood NSW. I had high hopes but didnt gain much.Engine was definitely smoother but not much else. Also sports air cleaner had stripped thread so Tony fits small gutter bolt with square nut and square nut goes down the hatch and makes large KEYWAY in No. 6 bore! Above all, DONT let Tony (Brian Westlake) touch your car, but if you must fit 138 Red remember to use red motor starter motor as well ( not like Tony until he found origin of screeching sound!)

That won't fly in Vic, will need engineers to be legal and have insurance.

I suspect that you can do the red 138 change legally, though it would be a fine line of interpretation.

NCOP allows for an engine change with a power increase of up to 20% without certification. The real change comes about from remaking the new red engine mounts. NCOP Section LA Engines allows that:
"The installation of replacement engine mounting brackets does not require certification under the LH Codes provided that sub-frames, chassis members or body members are not altered."

Provided the red mounts don't "modify" the front crossmember, it should be OK without certification. Fine line of interpretation I guess.

Cheers,

IN NSW yeah harv it used to be fairly easy but now they say SAME ENGINE where it used to be same manufacturer so in there eyes a red motor isn't a grey motor  BUT i'm pretty sure a "friendly" rego inspector wouldn't be to worried and the numbskulls at the registery would have no clue, stupid part the engineer i have dealt with when i quizzed him on it would want NOTHING upgraded would walk out look at welded on engine mounts say that looks fine $XXX thankyou very much easyiest money ever would make and can go up to a 161

It's not legal, that's all there is to it. You might get it past Vic Roads but it's not legal to swap the engine to an engine that was not factory for that model car. If you have an accident and an assessor see it's and recognizes the change you can be denied a payout.

Having said that, many many people have done this for many years me included. Just paint the red grey.
