CRAP IN THE OIL PUMP and SUMP

Post by Lex68 »

G Day All,

An oil leak originating between the big end and gearbox got the better of me, so, I removed gearbox and flywheel cleaned it all down and the culprit revealed itself as a weeping big end cap gasket..... I was dreading the oil seal.

Anyway, on removing the sump I discovered this pile of fibrous crap surrounding the pick up strainer and in the sump. The pick up is a little different as seen in the pics, now I was wondering, Was there a filter type material ever used ?

If no filters were ever used my two assumptions are a home made filter inserted inside the strainer that has broken down and by some miracle made it's way through the oil system without blocking any oil galleries etc or someone absent minded person (for a better word) has left it in the sump? :?

Happy I decided to replaced the sump gasket.

Cheers

Eeeww!

The sludgy crap is normal for a grey... the fibrous stuff is just wrong. Could be someone has had an accessory oil filter on it, and the filter element shat itself and disintegrated. Could also be a rag was left inside and has gone through.

Was there any fibrous crap inside the strainer? If so, it would be a good idea to give the oil system a flush.

I'd pull the side plate and rocker, and see if the fibres got up that far.

Cheers,

Hi Harv's

The inside of the strainer was good, I had the side plate off and lifters out when I replaced my timing gear, no signs of the material then and when I primed the pump oil came through the rocker galleries as it should.

So I'm good to put the strainer back on as is (cleaned of course) and proceed with my gasketing :D

Cheers
