Removing Harmonic Balancer
Removing Harmonic Balancer
Would anyone have a harmonic balancer puller tool for a grey motor I could borrow? My EK motor met an untimely death last week. I am able to turn engine over by hand. All pistons move but pushrods dont move so need to take harmonic balancer off. I am on the Morninton Peninsula.

Your timing gear is gone.
Re: Removing Harmonic Balancer
Thanks Bootlegger. Agree, but it was making a loud knocking before it died, but idling OK. Others there said it sounded like a conrod, but as I said, it turns over easily by hand. The two dont seem to add up.
Re: Removing Harmonic Balancer
Mine turned really easily with a nice big knock in the bottom end. But start with the timing gear, unfortunately the harmonic puller I had went when I sold my last EK. Stupid thing to do....

Re: Removing Harmonic Balancer
John, I'm not sure how far you've got with it but have you noticed any slop in the harmonic balancer? Grab it and see if you can move it up and down to see if it is loose in anyway. Most likely it will be the timing gear if its an old fibre one but you might have either stripped the keyway on the crank or even snapped the nose off the front of the crank. Does the balancer turn when you crank it? It may also have a alloy timing gear fitted (they have been known to fail with respect to the steel hub separating from the alloy gear).
Are you desperate for the puller? I have one but I am away till Thursday.

Thanks Devilrod. That was the plan. I've found one to borrow. Saw one on ebay for $75. A lot of cash for what will probably be a one off use for me. I can't believe after having it on club permit for a month or so, I've had gear linkages come off, generator let go and now this.
I might as well be in the shed with bad weather this week.
No slop Craig. As above. I have one I can borrow. Start with timing gear and see where I end up.
I hope to meet some of the people I read on here at shows etc. I've only had EK a short while so just learning stuff as I go.

John,
Does you harmonic balancer have only the original thread in the middle, or is it a late model one with the three tapped holes in the front face? If the latter, a SuperCheap puller will get it off.
I've got both pullers here, but the return postage would come close to the cost of a new tool.
Cheers,
Harv

I have found one, thanks Harv. Picking it up today. It's the type with thread in the middle.
