Ratbox is dead right there!.Wagons and other body styles are getting "few and far between" because of a number of reasons.
1. Metal prices, ie:- "The Crusher"
2.Demand for them.
3.Supply is diminishing.
4.Rust ( and neglect) .
5.Cars ( some restorable ) are wrecked for parts.
Other reasons as well but these are probably the main ones.
I was flipping through some mid to late '90's Unique cars and Just cars mags the other day and noticed some of the prices then compared to now.
For example, a wagon now for $3500 as Harko guessed at would have been bought for around a grand or so back then.
There were "showroom' condition cars advertised for $4000.Nothing in the editions I looked at was over $5500 ( execpt for highly modded ones).
I agree with Harko's $3500 guess. You'd probably get a regoed original old girl with some faults and repairs needed but on road and drivable for around that figure.
You might be lucky and stumble across a cheaper one and maybe in better condition. It's restorabilty will depend on your budget and your ability or the ability of the person doing the repairs and parts supply also plays its part.Anything is restorable given, time, money and ability( except maybe the one FB Wannabe's sedan his Dad recently found for him
).
It's all about luck and being in the right place at the right time.
I've bought some absolute bargains at times and have found the "grape vine" ( so to speak ) to be as good and sometimes better than actively perusing the newspapers, internet and magazines looking for cars.
I know when you want something you want it NOW!!, and sometimes the right one comes up quickly and sometimes it don't.
The "thrill of the chase" is all part of the fun.
Terry.
