Hi Guys
As my motor (186) is getting a bit tired I am looking at replacing it. My wagon is a four speed manual, but I can get hold of an engine with an Auto on it. I am wondering if the motor itself would be suitable if I take the auto off?
Could someone tell me if there is any difference between Holden Red Auto and Manual motors and what I would need to do, if anything, to convert the Auto to a manual. Can I just swap over the manual bits like the flywheel from my motor to the Auto one??
Anything else I need to do/look out for?
Thanks In advance...
Wayne..

As far as I know (and that isn't very far), the blocks are the same, but output shaft of the auto will have a 'locator' in the end of it. This will have to be replaced with a 'spigot bush' to suit the manual gearbox that you're using.
I don't know if was just me, but I had a hell of a time getting a spigot bush out last time I tried - ended up getting very ugly, so not sure if you can use the one from your old red too easily. Probably best to replace it anyway.

Re: Holden Red motors..
I have found drilling holes in the spigot bush and pulling it out in pieces much easier

I have found leaving right where it is even easier
that is unless it absolutely has to come out which it shouldn't
but that is getting the manual bush out the auto bush is easy to remove then just go buy a new manual bush they're only a couple of bucks and definitely not worth the drama of trying to save a second hand one

Thanks Guys for the info.
Yeah, I hadn't thought about the spigot bush. I'd heard of DevilRod's way of getting them out, so I might give that way a go, followed by Trev's way ... and then probably Alan's .. by then its too late for Mick's way
Anyhow, sounds like its worth going for the motor then.
Cheers

Re: Holden Red motors..
you are using the engine that now has the auto behind it and you are putting the manual behind it? if so the auto bush is a simple remove that's if it doesn't fall off or come off with the torque converter
then check that there isn't already a manual bush in there
from there it's up to you muck around trying to get the bush out of yor manual motor to save a couple of bucks or just go to the shop and buy the new bush

Thanks Mick..
yeah you're right. I'm converting the auto to a manual so i'm better off buying a new bush.
I'll need to get some gaskets too... need to swap the sump and some chrome dress up gear
