Re: Australia's Route 66
Great pics. Yeah. Albury is a real stand out. A favorite 1/2 way stop from Syd-Melb & Vice Versa.... Also a popular stop for years as Vic didn't have poker machines I think until the early 90's!
I'm not sure where this pic was taken and when..I know its not a relic existing today... but gee I remember many service stations like this one.
Cheers

Re: Australia's Route 66
One of the best roadside relic towns (On the old Hume Hwy between Wangaratta & Wodonga, Vic) still totally intact, is Chiltern.
If this town was on Rt.66 in the states, it would be a popular ghost town like Mc lean in Texas, with stacks of tourists... sometimes we Aussies dont notice our own classics.
Worth a trip there - if just to pose your car in various locations!!

The Old Dora Dora Hotel - 70k's east along the Murray river from Albury.
This old pub was full of all sorts of collectabes when old Alf and his wife ran it. i visited it in Dec. 2001. Only to find it closed.
Driving the '54 Plymouth belvedere I bought for my wife.

A fairly modern Service Station that failed in Stawell (vic)
An old 60's Motel sign - still doing its job in Horsham (vic)
This Old classic 50's motel in oakleigh (Melbourne) is a survivor. It stayed all original up until recent years when it got a massive redevelopment & extension.
Happy to see the old 50's entrance building survived.

Re: Australia's Route 66
That would have been a nice spot to stop. Roadhouse & all.
Here's an abandoned garage in Kingsville Melbourne 1950's-60's vintage. Quite a large set up with extra garges and sheds attached
Old drums of grease and 1 fanbeat survives unsold!

Re: Australia's Route 66
Went on a mid-week road trip today in Central Victoria.
The Calder Highway has by-passed Kyneton for years now.
An Old Chevy 1920's Truck rotting away in a front yard in Lancefield
Mollison Motors, an old Holden Dealership. Ended up as a Toyota Dealership before closing.
i organised an FB & EK Holden Club of Vic run to Mollison Motors in the mid 90's. The proprieters were the Lee Bros. Nice blokes who took over their Dad's business. In a shed across the road they had a collection of old Holdens. Most were trade-ins they had kept due to their rarity... factory ordered odd bod stuff
Like a HT Belmont with an opel 4 speed coming up through the vinyl floor mat, a HR Premier with a Bench Seat etc.
An Old highway garage - darn! The highway moved!
