HR under bonnet colours and lead wiping

Post by 56FJ »

Hi everyone - this is not FB-EK related but a friend of mine is restoring an HR van to original specs and is unable to get the correct colours for the firewall, skirts etc. She has been told they were black while others have said they were dark grey. Any suggestions for how to get a match for this? She also wants to re-do the lead wiping where pillars join the roof. Apparently there was rust there and it has now been removed. She has someone to do the job but cannot get the materials.

Cheers.. Ken

You should be able to buy 18/82 tin/lead at a good welding supplies place , Google is your friend........
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

You should be able to get lead wiping lead from any decent auto panit supplier.
The engine bay should be a real dark grey.
Its not clinker grey. It is almost black.

Thanks for the help. RE the paint colour: after speaking to someone in the know it seems the under-bonnet dark grey varied from week to week and from factory to factory. Whatever paint GMH had at the time was apparently mixed in. It's now a matter of actually seeing an original to get an idea of what the colour physically looks like and then matching it.

Cheers..Ken
