Drive line vibes

Post by reddo »

Yo..

Out cruisin on the weekend.
I noticed a vibration in the car .
Doesnt occur on acceleration or slowing down.
Sorta makes itself noticeable when your matching throttle to engine revs and road speed ... i guess thats the best way i can describe it.. no load.
Around 45 to 55 mph.

Have recently replaced front uni thinking that was the problem.
Had a good look at the diff yoke. Its tight with no movement.

Tailshaft front yoke seems to sit well back out of the box ( at least 50 or 60mm). Have measured a spare tailshaft out of an EK.. same length

Given that there is no rear gearbox mount i am sort wandering if the front engine mount might be a bit "spongey" and this is causing the rear pf the box to whip around a bit causing the vibes...
Can anyone suggest anything else to look for...

Was considering getting the shaft checked for balance.

Regards

i'd get the shaft checked, have a look at it yourself first to see if one of the welded on weights has come off. i had this happen to my tonner and it had a similar feel as your describing.

My FB has chronic wobbles at about 60mph.

We have put it down to the tailshaft needing a balance.

Got a 10% off tailshaft balancing voucher and promptly lost it :(

Anyone got any idea what it costs to have one balanced if you remove it yourself?

Check for slop in the rear extension housing bush maybe?.

Gearbox output shaft bearing??

Tailshaft could be out of balance?

I remember Brown Bear telling me that he drove a red motor FB of Jacko's to the Yamba Nats and it had a vibration it it that was that bad, the car was dubbed "The Pleasure Machine".

Turns out that it had a red motor diff centre and someone hadn't seated one side of the uni joint into the yoke properly thus causing some "Pleasure" whilst driving!!

So....... check that the uni is seated in the pinion yoke perhaps?
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Hi all

Ratted through my old 'olden bits last night and ...... Bingo...... came up with a new old stock front engine mount.
Up early this morning and ripped the front mount out... thanks to some timing cover oil dribble the mount rubber was the consistency of a black jelly.
Whacked the new one in ....
Took her out for a test run....
Result.... no more vibes... drives perfect .

Yeeeeeeeee - haaaaaaaaa..... might even make it to Rat Day tomorrow.

Going to rehash this as I have the same issues.
Hit 55 to 65 mph(on my speedo) and when accelerating all is good, when decellerating all is good but when the engine speed matches the car speed, I get some serious vibrations. I have replaced engine and gearbox mounts to no avail.
179, 5 speed HR diff= 3100 revs at 110kph
If it is the tailshaft out of balance, is the anywhere in wetsern Sydney that I can contact to get this corrected?

Would recomend Sydney Driveline Service (10 Reservoir Ave Greenacre NSW 2190 ph: (02) 9790 7344) for tailshaft balancing. They made the tailshaft up for my wagon and did a good job of it. Nice guys who were happy to explain to me what was going on and why they were doing various things.

Cheers,
Harv.

You may laugh, but I had a similar vibration at certain revs, and it made a hideous noise at the same time. After thinking it was either tailshaft. diff, uni joint, gearbox mounts, etc, it turned out to be the rubber on the exhaust support bracket attached to the floor

Sometimes it's something simple

I too have had bad vibrations through the exhaust, I had a broken rubber exhaust hanger so I temporarily tied it up with butchers twine and it shook the crap out of the car  .
