I don't know, Brett - but I was always of the opinion that the 179 was an even smoother engine than the 186..... mind you, there would be precious few 179's around in original spec nowadays..... or 186's for that matter..

I hated the 202's - had three lessons and had to "do" my driver's license in a new HQ manual Belmont in 1973.... loathed it - always have had a great disrepect for HQ's ever since...

- and, yes - before anyone asks, I passed on my 18th birthday and couldn't wait to get home and take to the roads in the EK with red on white plastic "P" plates for the first 12 months - and 50 mph allowed maximum speed ..... we have travelled some distances together, since....

Right,
Hot 202 is now out of the car and sitting in the corner of the shed in shame. Awaiting it's fate.
Gave a statement to the police yesterday, they were only interested in the circumstances under which I obtained the thing.
Anyhow, bought myself a re built 186 sans head. bought a gasket kit on the way home last night and burnt some midnight oil. Here's the result so far:

I've decided looking at a red motor will remind me of this whole clysterf@&k.

And it's OK to be grey.

I'm with you, Richard - I pulled my "red" motor out and put a "grey" one back in....

Brett, I suppose without paint - they would all be that colour under the rust..... perhaps with a few "silver" bits...

I've had grey - grey, red grey, red red and now grey red in mine, Brett....
Oh, and to steal Richard's "thunder".... it's "in".... left him to connect up the 9,999 bolts, nuts, clips, hoses, wires ..... and stuff!
Perfect timing, arrived just in time to move the crane into position, sat the engine in and down on its front mounts - then the phone rang.... "come and pick me up".... perfect, Richard - just perfect....

As was the huge smile on your face - Cheshire Cat has nothing on you....

Well, there I am. I've assembled the motor, used a fresh gasket kit to keep the oil inside. Just attached the tranny,, then found the right balance point for the motor and tranny. The motor/ tranny now hanging in space, so I call my brother to give me a hand. I hang up, and here's Ross walking up my driveway! Like he said, timing.
Anyhow, Ross helps me to install motor on mounts with minimal firewall paint damage, and he's off with my thanks.
That was about 3 this arvo.
I connect all the stuff; pipes, hoses, wires, EGO sensor, injectors.
Add vital fluids.
Dial in dizzy
Crank engine sans plugs to get the oil pressure up.
Replace plugs and leads.
Check all connections again
Connect laptop to ECU.
Hook up timing light.
Turn key.......

.........oh the sweet sound of a 186....

You certainly don't stuff around mate, 1 week ago it was all doom and gloom.

Now go get that thing registered and we will see you at Sandown next Sunday

Why oh why do the manufacturers of engine cranes spread the legs just wider than the front inner track of an FB/EK?..... guess they'd like to have one - and make us pay for the privilege.....

I do know it's big day out on the mountain, Richard..... and forgive you if you don't stroll the FB around for a look see...

Your engine should never go off song - unless something fails! My suspicion is such that you would find something amiss easier by not lifting the bonnet... guess the laptop would highlight something in red if it were to offend.....

congratulations, all done and dusted - engineer's tick, VicRoads and rego this week....

I'm sure the blokes on the mountain could use your determination...

Right, engineer over today, go for a drive. I must say. The 186 runs pretty sweet with the EFI setup. Big thanks Craig, I look forward to dyno-tuning it when Im ready. For now, she's got plenty of go, and after a 20 minute self- tuning session with the laptop on the way to the EPA test, she runs flawlessly.
Anyhow, got a second VASS certificate. Funny, not as exciting as the first time, but nonetheless a big step. I'm fortunate to have a good engineer. So it's a roady next week and back to vicroads. The whole engine checking mistake cost me three weeks and about a grand. Hopefully I'll have her on the road before cup weekend.
Meanwhile, I can wait patiently to see how long before I get an answer regarding the fate of the stolen motor. It will be interesting to see how long it takes.
