The Project Goes Injected.
Re: The Project Goes Injected.
Hi Ross, Great to hear you are enjoying what northern NSW has to offer. Hope you bring some of that sunshine back with you on your return. I don't know about plates so soon, but the engineer's certificate will definitely be a major step in the right direction. As for the whistle from the throttle body, now that you mention it, Dave, I recall it became more apparent when I set up the idle bypass valve. Basically, I set the throttle Zero so the butterfly was a cigarette paper from the wall, and adjusted the idle using the bypass valve. Also Zeroed in the TPS to the computer. With the auto tuning, it's very clever indeed. While driving, the computer takes readings from the oxy sensor and compares the readings to a pre-determined AFR map (which you can set; power, economy or minimum emissions)and corrects the VE table along with the pulsewidths to the injectors as you go. If you are happy with the new settings, just hit the "Burn to ECU" button and it's set. (I've done this with the laptop in the passenger seat. You can alter and save settings while the engine is running.
Once registered, there will be a lot more "On-Road" tuning, hopefully with the wife driving while I play around with the spark advance, looking for the optimum advance curve, so as to maximize power/economy and minimize heat from the extractors.
The Oxy sensor and guage (The guage is really handy) is an LC-1 unit from DIY Autotune in the U.S. Cost me 300 bucks, money well spent. Its great to be able to see what the fuel mixture is doing while I drive, right now, it drops to 12 under power, 14 at cruise and 14.7-15 at downhill coast. Car runs well, too!

Great, Richard - but I would expect nothing less from your high MDM approach.
Just bye the way, in case you are interested - we are enjoying lovely Mooroolbark weather at present...... guess it's not much better in Croydon..?

Another hitch.
Went in for a roady. A few items not too bad.
-Handbrake cable touches exhaust and tranny mount - making brackets to divert cable.
Oil leak from motor, he says it's the rear main, under closer inspection it's the back part of the rocker cover, and oil dribbles down the back of the motor. Easy fix with gasket goo.
Small hole in floor just above rear axle. Fix with a plug.
This I what kills me: holes in parcel shelf run through swage in sheet metal, may compromise structure in accident. Really?? Well I've fixed it now (pictured) and now I gotta get those gay looking box things to mount my speakers.
Oh well, al least I can rest assured that a speeding semi can plough into my back end and I'll be safe now, and I'll probably not notice it as soon thanks to my hokey looking speaker mounts blocking my vision!!

Re: The Project Goes Injected.
Don't go to VicRoads, Dandenong...... I tried to change the weight of my caravan records..... ask me, and I'll give you a full report...... I have since learned that Burwood is a better option.... Dandenong = NO!
Ah, Richard - the joy of modification... but, you'll have your RWC.
I guess those of us who have rear deck speakers can rest comforted in the knowledge that we have created a collapsible impact zone to protect our rear seat passengers without head rests!
My suggestion would have been to ask the RWC bloke if you could provide a sizeable speaker support frame welded to the parcel shelf - the engineer who ticked off your build would have agreed to that - it's not out of the question yet.... just a bit of leg work on your part.... much better than those "Hokey" mount boxes..... (some would call them bass reflex cavities)....
frats,
Rosco
p.s - what's the cure for fast growing lawns in our locale...? mine are re-growing to cutting height in less than a week at present..... I'd like to get some other stuff done, other than mow my lawns......

Thanks Ross.
I was planning on going to Burwood. For now the holes have been filled, and the rear speakers can wait until after I get registered. It's a bit stressful, all this. My engineer report is good for 30 days. So the clock is ticking. Hopefully, when I get the roady, VicRoads will just want to check all the numbers match up and there's nothing obviously wrong with the car. (which there is not). Really, I would hope that an engineer report AND a valid roadworthy should be enough.

Re: The Project Goes Injected.
Richard,
My suggestion - get on the phone asap and get that appointment - they won't issue one without about a week's notice...... get your appointment and then fill the blanks....
You are yet to deal with the true holders of all "bureaucracy cards"...... I do very much hope you get a smooth passage.....
Phone them before you go down - and make absolutely certain you have all "original" certificates, letters and anything relevant - or you'll be back for a second appointment.....
I made my presence very well "known" at Dandenong.... I believe some three and a half months later - they would remember me..... including those in the waiting seats....... not happy, Jan!
Ended up getting a woman (supervisor) from Benalla (as a result of asking for the most senior admin person I could get) to deal with it all - all done in less than 45 minutes "over the phone" (a bit of a wait whilst she made phone calls to VicRoads Dandenong - to give them the biggest "serve" they have probably had, then the van manufacturer and the weighbridge operator to confirm my paperwork).... not supposed to over the phone, but she took pity on me - and we shared the "angst" of those imbeciles I dealt with at VicRoads, Dandenong..... even she was amazed at their conduct and incompetance....
We eventually got the promise that the updated papers were coming - an email to confirm my weights if I was pulled over interstate. We left two days after this - without them coming through - but we had the email, the woman's contact number and all relevant certificate numbers and updated dates - otherwise, we would have missed this year's "half lap" - and would still be fighting with VicRoads, Dandenong......
Will give you a run down when we catch up... ooops, think I just did!
Yes, jump on Burwood - phone the day before, get a contact name, tell them you are writing down notes, go through your list of everything you need to bring with them and check them off - including birth certificate, passport if you are not a registered Australian citizen( I witnessed one poor soul having to drive into the city to get this and pay the exorbitant fee for an "on the spot" issue).... you ain't seen nuthin' yet, Richard....
And I was of the opinion that Metro were the pinacle of stupidity and incompetance........ just wait until you hit VicRoads.... you ain't seen nuthin' yet....

Another hitch.
This time it's a biggy.
Got roadworthy,Engineers certificate, receipts for the motor and the car.
All in order
Made appointment at VicRoads.
The Big Day is here at last!
At the counter, the bloke is punching all the details into the computer. Asks what sort of plates I want, Starts stamping all the paperwork.
Then he asks:
"Where did you get the motor?"
I promptly told him from whom and produced a receipt.
"it's stolen"
My heart stops and my world tips over.
According to records, it was stolen in 2004. Vehicle never recovered. Had to go to cop shop so they can chase it up. They were fairly understanding. The vicroads bloke says the cops have to "clear" the engine for rego. I assume this will involve tracking down the original owner. I'm not sure. Will he want it back? That is, a 3.3 black motor I bought for $150 and spent $2k rebuilding.
My engineer says he will issue me another report when this is sorted out, which is a glimmer of hope. But I'm still very saddened by these developments. I guess I was naive to assume if the vendor gives me a receipt that should be assurance enough for me. Chances are, he purchased it fair and square as well.
Anyone been through this? Or know what I can expect to happen.
I feel like my 6 year , $20000 project is all for nothing. Part of me wants to give up and sell, the other says to persevere.
Your comments will be most welcome, as I'm in a very dark place right now.

Not a happy household here, but please note, he CANNOT sell Faye FB as she is MY car.
We will persevere and somehow, someday, there will be a shiny Tinkerbell green FB Holden in my carport.
