any ideas why i cant just pull it off? have i missed something?
why can't i get my steering wheel off?
They are a compression spline and require force to remove. Most times this can be done with strength and some back and forth twisting.
BUT! doing this can cause fractures to the old wheel. You would be best off using a steering wheel puller. Available from any decent auto parts shop or tool supplier.

if yor gunna try brute force and twisting thing put the nut back on a few threads otherwise you could end up with an unexpected broken nose
also rather than buying a puller, screw the nut back on till it's flush with the end of the thread pull back on the steering wheel useing one hand and yor knees or get a mate to help, and TAP the shaft with a hammer DON'T BELT IT, FIRM TAPS
one of my mates went to tech with a guy who was changeing his steering wheel in his lunch break, when he didn't return after lunch they went looking for him
found him layed out cold in the front of his car steering wheel in his lap 2 black eyes
