I mean, I drive a 50+ year old car that is slow, uneconomical and requires a lot more attention and servicing than a modern car, and have just spent a small fortune on another that I'll probably never drive on public roads (just sneak out and lick it occasionally when the wife isn't watching)

So I guess I don't have an answer why, except to say that you have to be a little bit crazy to be sane.

But I have to admit...the guy who chopped-up that poor defenseless little car was a fair bit crazier than me
