I'm in trouble! I was driving my wagon today, after spending about 8 hours cutting her back and polishing her yesterday (gee she looks good) and for a short period of time a reasonably loud ticking noise was coming from the motor. This didn't affect the driving, although I decided at that point to start heading home.
This turned out to be a good move as about 6-7 minutes later she died, instantly. She didn't even say goodbye, just went and that was it.
Anyway, after i wiped the tears from my face and towed her home, I discovered the rotor wasn't spinning. Ahh, my problems solved, the dizzy was stuffed. So I pulled the dizzy out only to find that it was turning fine (when i hand turned the base).
So now fear strikes me deep as I consider what the next problem could be. As far as I can tell so far it must be deep in the murky depths of my 40 something year old beauty$$$$$.
Any ideas where to start?? :(

Welcome to the club Sigs , youre not a TRUE grey motor owner until you can change a timing gear on the side of the road with a penknife and a 5 cent piece :D :D
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Ihave to say the old fibre gear has let you down, Time for a new Alloy unit with the increment timing adjustment., set her up at 4 degrees before and your laughing.

But it does only sound like the timing gear.

thanks for the tips, I'll attack the timing gears at the next opp. For the meantime, the grey beast has been having a run this week and I'll give you a tip, the warmaride heater in the wagon is worth it's weight in gold!!! The bloody ute is like travelling in a freezer :shock:

Yep Smooth, unfortunatley the man I purchased her off passed away last week so the Wagon was there saying her goodbyes. It was the only car he had ever owned and he bought it new from Dwyers as the demo model back in it's day! Apparently he battled many attempts to persuade him to trade her in for a new car. Great guy, great story, anyway, the wagon was saying her goodbyes. The uncanny thing was she broke down after leaving the funeral, as if to say see you later, I'm going with him!! And off she went!

I must admit, I'm not much of a mechanic, but I'm going to learn as I go. where do you get the tools they show in the manual i.e. 6A5, 6A3-4,

thats a tad spooky that the car died on the way home from the funeral of the person that bought her new :shock:

you know you can change the cam gear with the camshaft still in the engine :twisted:

instead of it taking you about 5 hours you can do it in about 2

BUT you have to know what you are doing and it needs two people.

Its starting to sound like fun. I looked at it and thought I'd just pop it off and replace it with another!
So Sunny Tim I need to take the camshaft out? Is this where you undo the retaining bolts through the camshaft gear holes.
After this does it just slide out or do you need to do additional work to pop out the camshaft?
Also, I note in the workshop manual it talks about using a special tool to release the gear from the camshaft. Is this tool necessary or is there another way of doing it? Once I have it off is it just a matter of hitting it back on again?

On the other hand Lucy Blue, how do you pop it off while the camshaft is still in the motor?? Sounds a helll of a lot easier. What implications are there for doing it this way and do you just whack the new one into place?

I've pulled the rocker cover off, crapped myself, then pulled the rocker shaft, push rods, coil, distributor, side plate, tappets??, then finally turned the crankshaft so the camshaft was in position to undo the retaining bolts, then figured out I'd need to remove basically the whole front end to slide the camshaft out, so I did that (biggest part of the job, rusty bolts, how about the person who decided itwas a good idea to put the screws for the indicator grille pieces inside the guard, whose #%@$ idea was that in design!)

Anyway, the camshaft is out, whoohoo!! Now it's a waiting game for the new camshaft timing gear to come in......
