Mate the running lean and erratically could still be the PCV valve being faulty, if you didn't try a new one before you took the head off try the PCV valve in the misbehaving motor in a red motor you know runs well to rule it out completely.

Hi Mick...
Sorry ... i forgot to mention i fitted a new PCV valve yesterday arvo.... $10.00 at the local auto parts joint..... made no difference to the idle..... I couldnt be so lucky.

Welsh plugs .. when i pulled the old manifold gasket off i could see they are all brand new. The 186S is a recond GEM Motor.. doesnt look to have done much work at all.....
No lip in the bore at all.

Keep asking myself ... "why just 5 and 6".....
Yep.... most things point to vacumn of some sort .. especially when the vacumn for the brakes comes off the manifold down between 5 and 6.... ???
I cleaned the block and head up had a close look around the head and block near 5 and 6.....no signs of anything out of the ordinary besides what i mentioned about the water getting around the back head stud bolts .. also never seen water running out of a manifold bolt hole ????

in the end i fitted a new head gasket and have refitted and tensioned the head, hookd everything back up apart from the stuff on the manifold side..

I am swapping the dual throat and headers onto the panelvan .. so will fit the stock carb and manifold / exhaust to the HR and see if it runs sweet then.....
If it does i will know the culprit is either the carb or the inlet manifold ..
Might give it a drink of chemiweld while i am on the go.

Found time to fit the 202 electronic dizzy in the p/van today too.... seems to perform a little better .... i have to say that to justify the $20 i paid for it and the coil......
I am stuffed... just gotta find time to cook a BBQ for the bunch of bludgers sittin watchin telly inside now.....  :)

Oh yeah... BEER.... i am gunna new heaps of beer.....Beer fixes everything !!!!

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I dont know how to tell yas this without starting with .................. DOH... DOH...... DOH
I have just been released from hospital where i recieved 14 stitches between my eyes......

SHOCK HORROR....
WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED REDDO :?: :?: :?:
I got hit 6 times with a chunka 4X2............

WHO IN THE HELL HIT YA???
Answer: I DID.... YUP.. I SMACKED MYSELF 6 TIMES .
WHY??

I have been messing with old cars and bikes for pretty much my entire 57 years on this earth........ and never have i been so stupid in all that time.
Its here i pause to give you guys that submitted the ideas about vacumn leaks 9/10.
Just 9 out of 10... not 10 out of 10. But youi can be forgiven because you hadnt seen the manifold.....
Here it is....
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 290371.jpg

Looks harml;ess enough aye..
Those of you with the keen eyes would have spotted the brass adaptor ....it is one of those brass adaptors you screw in the block when fitting an old pressure gauge and sender unit . SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooo.. one of the outlets had the vacumn pipe for the brake booster.... The other had .. "Jack Shit"screwed into it... hence a massive air leak. Didnt spot it until i was unscrewing it to clean up the manifold... again... doh... doh.. doh
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 290372.jpg
I must be going deaf in my old age.. i should have been able to hear it sucking... bit i didnt and... i am a goose

Anyway... enough of the public shaming and humilaition on my behalf....
I invite abuse and smart arse comments from anyone that feels like serving me up big time.

Hey... the hole was facing the rocker cover and i just didnt see it.....

Slight change of subject but still 186S related.. whilke removing the headers i found this item bolted on the front header stud .. also bolts on through one of the water jacket bolt up points.... Never seen one on a Holden motor before??
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a150/ ... 290374.jpg

Only purpose i can see for it is that it forms a heat sheild to keep the heat from the headers getting to the 2 hoses that run to the inlet manifold.

After i got over kicking hitting myself i moved on tyo sanding up the headers and giving them a coat of heat proof clear... here they are sitting on the "149S" 8)

Cheers ... empty head... Oh come on Reddo, your not that dumb really your not........ or am i ???

Hi all...
Stitches come out next week
I am taking an apprehended violence order out on myself so i dont keep smacking me.... :D

Yeah... i am sure we have all done something similar in our lifetme... and i aint afraid to go public about it. Lota people would have come up with some bullshit story about how they cured it.

however i am not on my own with overlooking the problem.
My son Luke got the car blue slipped at a mechanics back in September 2010. The rough idle was evident then. Luke asked the mechanic to take a look... he adjusted the idle and mixture and stated that it was a cammy motor....

Luke bought it off one of the mates who had owned it for a long while and never got around to registering it...always complained about the rough idle.
So... there has been at least 4 of us looked at it ... and i can at least take the credit for finding the fault.....well i think i have. I have still got to fit another manifold , carb and header pipeto the HR and fit the "S"goodies on the pvan. Wont know for certain if the issue is over until i get it running...
