Stripped Sump plug.
Can anyone tell me how to fix a stripped sump plug?
Can it be done with the motor still in the car?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Find one slightly bigger and re-tap the hole to suit, run some oil through it to flush.

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
use grease on your tap to collect as much of the metal as you can
Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Had the same problem saturday after an oil change, got a tip from my neighbour and went to Repco they sell oversize sump plugs that cut/cleanup their own thread. Its a bit hard to explain and I can't post a pic as its now in the sump, the sump plug is a bit longer than normal and the first part of the threaded section that goes in has cut outs for the excess metal to exit.
Probably sounds confusing but worth a try go to Repco and ask for part# RSP1006 and have a look, it worked for me
P.S. Have also done the grease on tap as well but the plug from Repco was quick and easy.

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Thanks guys i'll try one of those ideas.
Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Ditto all above....
Many people believe that the sump plug has to be wrenched up tight...... and eventually someone over-tightens it....
For the little they cost vs the assurance, fit a new compressible copper washer to the plug each time when doing an oil change. It will seal the plug and also prevent it from undoing in running.......
I persevered for years with the nylon washer fitted to my sump.... until I found these.....
frats,
Rosco

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Did an oil change today and now I have a stripped thread
As I was undoing the nut I noticed it was getting harder to undue at one point. When I got the nut off there was some thread from the sump wrapped around the nut. Now the nut won't tighten and It leaks from the plug
I'll try Newman's suggestion of the Repco self tapping plug. If I can't find that, it's plumbers tape and silastic

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Dont forget the magnet-on-a-stick option up yer hole after you retap the thread.
Or you could do like I did, just glue the sucker in with Alaldite then drive across the country.....

Magnet up my hole?
When you araldite it, what do you do when you want to take it off?

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
I did it as a temporary measure. When the oil was out,the shops were shut and it had to be running,
It wasnt Araldyte,it was Sellys Metal Cement.
Just undo it like you would normally when its time to remove it to do the job properly.
And the magnet on a stick is to collect any metal bits that end up in your sump when you retap the hole.
One of those extending things that looks like a car antenna with a little magnet on the end.

Re: Stripped Sump plug.
Oh well, two local Repco's don't have that oversize plug in stock.
Until I get it fixed properly I've put some plumbers tape and silicone on the plug. Seems to be holding for now
