This FB photo was taken by mate mate Petet Coombs (Dec) in the 60's.
Pete said it fell off a car transporter and was either new or near new.

Was it a road carrier or was it on a train? Looks like it was travelling tail first. Not too much could be salvaged off that poor 'new' girl. Look how the front fender has been cut to allow the wheel to turn.

Pete said it was a road transporter. It looks like the front fender was cut with a gas axe. I'll tip the colour was red & white.

Pete had a mate called 'The ghost' who owned a towing yard. He often would give Pete right-offs to suppliment his parts collection. (Pete had a standard FB sedan at the time)
I remember as a teenager seeing a dark green & white EK sedan in Pete's sideway - that had a massive dent in the middle of the front. Pete said that it was owned by some "young f**kwit" who kept topping up his brake master cylinder as a wheel cylinder had a leak. As Pete showed me it gave out totally and he hit the tree killing himself. 'Ghost' gave the car to Pete when all parties were through with it.

When Pete went on to a HD holden, it was not unusual to see 2 other damaged HD's in his sideway at any time.

Good idea bro.
Those single system braking systems can drain all fluid unlike todays 4 part multipul systems which just drains 1 part if a problem arrises at 1 wheel.

The other thing was the driver (of that car all those years ago) was obviously using excessive speed on possibly hilly winding roads knowing he had defective brakes. Not a good mixture for safety.

I had a 57 Cusso. They are built like tanks. I'd say for that damage the speedo would be correct!
Check out this 56 cusso. Bear in mind they have a full chasis.
This car has had huge speed, lost control and literally rolled sideways along 2 brick fences! Had to believe that you could damage these cars that much

cheers

Holy Moly !!!

Some serious impact stuff in a lot of those pics and yeah that first one has all the appearance of a hit big enough to be a heart stoppa!

These days, while extrications can be very demanding on everyone, we have state of the art hydraulic gear along with stacks and stacks of other tools and rescue aids to get the trapped people out. From what some old school firies told me when I joined up 24 + years ago in the old days they relied on pry bars, hacksaws, block and tackle and the like - it must have been hell for the vehicle occupants if they were still alive. Couple that with todays medical intervention HIRT choppers and roadside trauma management and you have a much better chance of survival.

Says a lot for sensible driving in the old cars that's for sure, as the only crumple zones inside them are the occupants

Safe driving everyone

Dave Mac
