Scan from Holden "EK" Parts Catalogue

Post by Harv »

From a few of my recent posts, I am in the process of putting together a "manual" for the FB/EK Warmaride heaters. The idea is to pull together a heap of scattered info off the FB/EK and FE/FC forums, old manuals, my dissassembly photos etc into one place. The manual will give some idea
a) on what Warmaride heaters were offerred in different Holdens (with pictures to identify them),
b) what the FB/EK ones in particular looked like,
c) how to remove, pull apart, reassemble and install one without breaking anything,
d) how to overhaul the heater taps (both the manual and thermostatic type),
e) what parts are available (heater ducts, taps etc... including contact details) and how to make some of the ones that are not available,

I intend to get it proof-read by the gurus, then post if on the forum for us all to use 8) .
My guess at the moment (yet to be confirmed by the gurus) is that
a) both FB's and EK's were offered with an optional heater which screwed up under the plenum chamber cover door, which was just a bare heater core (some still have demister ducts attached). These were the "Fresh Air and Demister Package", often referred to as the "poverty pack" heater.
b) both FB's and EK's were offered with an optional heater which bolted under the centre of the dash, which had a dark grey square casing with a fan (some had demister ducts, some had a flue, some had a flue with controls, some had manual taps, some had thermostatic taps). These were the "Recirculating and Demister Package", often referred to as the "Warmaride" heater.
c) Some FB's may have been offerred with the round Warmaride heater with two doors as per FC's.

In pulling together the literature, I have the following:

The Holden “FB” Parts Catalogue indicates that two heaters were available from Holden:
a) The “Fresh Air and Demister Package”, part number 7414672
b) The “Recirculating and Demister Package”, part number 7414673
The catalogue shows a line drawing of a round heater with doors marked “NASCO” and “Warmaride” similar to that offered on the FC Holden.

The FB Holden NASCO Car Accessories brochure indicates that a “Car Heater” was available, with the following text:
“Even on the coldest winter day you drive snug and warmed with warm air flow throughout the car. Demisters supplied with the heater remove dangerous windshield fogging. Two types...Fresh Air and Recirculating”.
The accompanying drawing shows a square cased heater with a winged heater knob escutcheon located under the centre of the dash (the type of heater commonly referred to as an FB/EK Warmaride).

The EK NASCO Car Accessories brochure is identical to the FB brochure with respect to the heater text and picture.

I also have copies of the two Holden Workshop Manuals ("FB" Series and "EK" Series) which indicate some radiator flushing procedures and the need for antifreeze if running the optional heaters (though no other info).

What I would like please are scans of the following (just the heater details... not the whole manual!):
a) the The Holden “EK” Parts Catalogue
b) the Fitting Instructions for any Warmaride heater (...wishfull thinking... none are known to exist)
c) any other brochures, manuals, part numbers etc that anyone may have lying around.
Any help very much appreciated.

Awesome!! Was just about to ask about the 'warmaride' heaters that were offered with the EKs and what parts are necessary to have it installed and running?

Thanks Harv!
I have a 'warmaride' heater and i'm told all the vents etc are already under the dash??
I'm sure there will be some parts missing though.
Have had it for years and yes it's definitely time to get it into blu...

Leinamoon,

The heater will bolt in to the two holes already in the front lip of the centre of the dash - just needs tweo short 1/2" bolts, and the right-angle brackets that should be hanging off the front of your heater casing. The top of the heater screws on using two of the existing plenum chamber screws - either through the heater flue casing (if it has a flue) or through another bracket of it has no flue.

The demister "slots" are already cut in the dash, and there are two holes in each ready for self-tapping screws. Look at the top of the dash, just near the windscreen and you'll see the slots.

Now look under the dash at the same place - there should be a metal vent (looks like a vacuum cleaner head) screwed into each slot. If there are no metal vents (and I bet there is not!), it gets harder... the metal vents are hard to get, and the only repro parts available are for FE/FC, and are made by Ed on this forum. They take a bit of mucking around, but will fit FB/EK (I have some in my wagon... thanks Ed!).

Hanging from the vents should be some corrugated hose which leads back to the heater casing. This hose is also painful to get if it is missing... best bet at this stage is to get some corrugated plastic hose from Clark Rubber, but be careful as the commonly sold hose often has a low temperature rating (60C) which is marginal. The original paper/steel coil or aluminium/steel coil hose is hard to get in the 40mm size to suit FB/EK Warmarides... many phone calls and visits shows that most Robbos/SuperCheap/Autobarn/auto AC workshops do not have it (at least in Sydney). 50mm aluminium hose is common but needs some muckiong around to fit.

The vents connect to rubber outlets on the side of the heater casing (one on passenger, one on drivers side). If these are perished or missing, you can get replacements from Obsolete Rubber Mats (Martin Frigo) in Victoria, though he is currently out of 90 degree bends (note that one side is a 90 degree, one is a 45 degree). At a pinch, you can cut down an FB/EK radiator hose to suit.

Post some pictures of what you have and I can help a bit more on the rest of the hookup.

Hi Tim,

I started simple, but the more I dug into the Warmarides the more interesting it got (and the more I've learnt).

Agree the installation isn't rocket science, though there are a few bits and pieces that can make life a lot easier (e.g. almost no Recirculatory heaters that are sold have the upper mounting bracket - a photo and some dimensions will make it easier for "the next guy"). I guess the document is a mixture of some history and some practical knowledge.

The Recirculatory I understand, though I think there may have been two types of Freshair:
• EK Holdens were offered with a fresh-air Warmaride, listed as the “Heater - Fresh Air and Demister FB, EK Right Hand Drive”, part number 7414672. The EK freshair Warmaride has a flue that bolts between the core casing and plenum control door. It has a hinged flap on the drivers side to allow air to recirculate (if the plenum control door is shut), but no other air doors. It has no connection to the dash-mounted controls other than the water valve rod. The water valve on freshair heaters was changed to the Ranco H16 thermostatic type, listed as Valve Assembly - Control FB, EK, part number 74146291. Ranco valves were offered in all later Warmarides. A conversion package was offered to turn FB recirculating Warmarides into EK freshair Warmarides (Conversion Package - Recirculating to Fresh Air FB Right Hand Drive, part number 7425042). I've got some pictures of this one, but Photbucket is misbehaving and won't let me post other than the photo below (will try again later).
• Some EK’s were also fitted with a fresh-air Warmaride with separate air controls. The flue has doors on the passenger and drivers side with a connection to the dash-mounted control. Levers on the front of the casing move internal flaps (they either cover the core, or close the side doors). The levers were connected to the dash controls. I assume that it is a rod that connects the two... the one I have on the bench has no rod, and I cannot find anyone with one installed yet. A similar one is pictured below (once owned by a forum member):

The Motorless has got me intrigued. I understood that late in the EK model run (July 1962), a Motorless heater was offered for the EK, listed as “Heater Package – Motorless FB, EK”, part number 7422438. A separate “Demister Package FB, EK”, part number M35155 was offered. There is a good chance that some of these were fitted by dealers into FB's, even though they were not the "new model" EJ or the "outgoing model" EK. The NASCO documentation I have seen for later model Motorless heaters shows the Motorless as being the bare-core heater that screws under the plenum (the documentation is known to be wrong though!)... I didn't know a Motorless came in the casing and was different to the bare-core one.

Would love to see some photos.

Very cool Tim 8) (and appreciated :D ).

I've never seen the "motorless" like that before... always something to learn with Nasco stuff! My thoughts on "motorless" are based on the drawing from the HR NASCO brochure:
Image
though I guess the picture could be wrong or the Motorless name could have changed between EK and HR.

Some tricky questions:
a) Thinking about parts numbers and bits on heaters I have, Holden offered a "Cover Plate & Stud Assembly FB, EK" part number 74231331 which was listed as only for the Recirculatory heater. My guess is that this is the rectangular bracket with two studs in your top two photos. If you add the bracket shown in the photo below:
Image
then the whole assembly bolts up perfectly to the FB/EK plenum cover door (phillips-head screws) and dash holes (1/2" bolts). The bracket stops the whole Warmaride hanging off just the two dash bolts. I've had two cover/bracket assemblies in two of the FB/EKs I've had, and the bits don't look homemade (they make my pigeon-poo welding look very, very bad  ). I guess it's possible that the cover plate/bracket were for Vauxhall/Chev etc, but it seems very unusual that they bolt up perfectly to an FB/EK plenum. There is also a changeover kit to turn Recirculating Warmarides into Freshair Warmarides (Conversion Package - Recirculating to Fresh Air FB Right Hand Drive, part number 7425042). I figured that this would be a flue to replace the cover plate/bracket (though I guess could be an "air control flue" to replace a "non air control flue". Appreciate your views on the above?
b) It looks like three different heater valves were offered:
Valve Assembly - Control FB, EK (part number 74224441) for Motorless heaters,
Valve Assembly - Control FB, EK (part number 74146291) for Freshair heaters, and
Valve - Water FB, EK (part number 74231311) for Recirculating heaters.
Legend has it that some heaters had a cable control on the heater valve, though I can't find a part number. Holden did offer a "Rod - Hot Water Control Lever FB, EK", part number 74146811. I know that the "manual" type valve (non-Ranco) does not "line-up" for a rod though. Do you have any pictures of the cables/rods for the three types of valves?
c) Do you know how the Freshair heater air levers connect to the AIR dash control? Any chance of a photo from your pink EK please?

Cheers,
Andrew.

The vents are in place! :)
And also this which is wedged up high under/ behind the dash in the middle.
Only have the air lever however on the dash control...
Not sure if the motor works yet..
What else is required?

Looks like a late model EK Freshair Warmaride heater. Some initial thoughts:
a) the little radiator core under the plenum vent is a Motorless Warmaride heater (poor mans version of your other one). Is it plumbed to the engine (rubber hoses through to engine bay), and if so do the hoses have a valve? You would remove this heater before you install your Freshair one.
b) You're missing two dash mounting brackets (easy to make out of angle iron), the rubber demister outlets (only critical if you want demisters... can make them from radiator hoses or can buy from Obsolete Rubber in Victoria), two demister hoses (Clark Rubber plastic hoses will probably suffice), the heater valve (bolts onto the side of the casing... you can jerry-rig the one from the Motorless heater if it is in place), the second lever on the dash to control the heater tap (not critical or needed if you have a manual valve), the connection between the dash air lever and the controls on the front of your Freshair (I only know of one in existance... SunnyTims).
c) First step - test to see if the core leaks. Easy way is to run some water from the garden hose through it and look for drips. Don't pressurise it with tapwater - Sydney tapwater can be nearly ten times higher pressure than the cooling system in FB/EKs was designed for. Leaky cores are easier to rectify before you install them :D
d) Check the fan/switch assembly with a battery charger if you can - it will give enough amps to run the motor but not enough to let the smoke out of the wires (it is very hard to get the smoke back into the wires... don't ask how I know  ).
