Double Trouble

Post by Jason »

G’day Fellas,

It’s been a while since I last posted and a lot has happened since then so I decided to start a new thread. I’ve now moved from Karratha to Margaret River although I spend most of the time in Perth or in the Pilbara for work.

I’ve set up my shed and now I’m into it. I’ve got two vehicles that I’m going to work on simultaneously. A FB and an EK, so suppose you could say I’ve got a foot in each camp. The FB is going to be restored back to as close to original condition as I can get it and the EK will be modified so I guess I’m sitting on the fence here as well. The EK currently has a 173 motor, 4 speed box with HR disc brakes. I’m planning to replace the red motor with a worked grey, diff & box but keep the discs using the theory that if you speed them up you need to slow them down and yes lower it as well. I’m keen to keep any modifications to the period though, sort of old school I guess.

The FB

Body: FB225-6689-A
Trim: 602-884
Paint: 585-9689 (Banff Blue)
Insert: 585-9905 (Canyon Blue)
Top: 585-9689

The EK

Body: EK225-21765-S
Trim: 739-966
Paint: 585-0115 (Wedgewood Blue)
Insert:
Top: 585-0246 (Snowcrest White)

So far I’ve started the strip and discover phase. I’ve uncovered a few ugly rust spots but pretty much standard to what I’ve seen on this forum. Being a Surveyor roving around the Pilbara I’ve managed scavenge a fare amount of parts from carcases strewn far and wide. At one stage I had 6 of the bloody things in various states of decomposition in the back yard. When I left Karratha I filled a 20ft sea container of parts so I should be pretty right for bits & bobs hopefully.

Anyway a post aint a post without the photos,

Anyway that’s probably enough for the moment. I’ll keep you all posted on the progress hopefully a little more frequently now I’m sorted a bit better.
Cheers

Gday Jason,

Looks like you are well set up in Margaret River.

Would be a lot nicer than Karratha to live eh?

Will you be in Perth this weekend?

Thanks Fellas, It's taken a while but getting there. Unfortunately I've got to get on the vino at a wine fesival this weekend so won't be able to make J's birthday.

Happy birthday though to the big fella and I'm sure we'll have a beer soon.

Cheers

Double trouble is right!!! Building one at a time causes enough headaches. Good luck! They will keep you busy for a bit, but well worth it.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

G'day Fellas,

Bit more progress this weekend,

Front crossmember dropped

Innards gutted

Image

Someones attempt at rust repair, tack weld plate directly over the top of the existing floor.

Image

and then smoother the crap out of the whole thing with bitumen paint

Image

mmmmm. Front sway bar tech srewed to the chassis

Image

Front subframe almost ready to come off

Image

Once the subframe comes off, the tack welded false floor comes off, fuel tank out and the rear axel removed she'll be off the the blasters. Then the fun starts cut, weld, grind, cut, weld, grind....
Cheers

Looking good Jason. With the strip down it always feels like two steps back before one step forward. I like how you collect spares in those parts... 8)
