yeah nice, mine are bits of treated pine 'railway sleepers'...thinking I might go a bit higher (welding helmet fits as is but a bit more room would be nice)

Got those retro spares panels for the van and as you say they need the wheel arch lip reshaped is all. They look to be more based on a sedan wagon profile, which makes no sense. Not a big deal but.

The vans are literally identical to a ute from the waistline down. I got a good fuel tank surround out of a van and grafted straight in to my ute which was about 10% there. They tended not to rust the rear floor as much but a lot of rust in the roofs, so potentially a good source, although they are rarest body type and sought after.
Just thought this may be helpful.

Had a go at round 2 of the driver's side rust repair --- got it sealed up against the weather for now (rain tomorrow)

The replacement doors look good - just the expected scratches and dents - they won't need any welding.

Here they are in my other work area behind the garage which is fenced off to hide my sheds and bits. It used to be 'the clothes line yard' and looked okay

I've been underneath, sealing some bits and pieces and making sure others can drain ... no pics of that but here's a pic of one of the mudguards with some repair pieces tek screwed on ready for welding - top one is an insert, bottom one I decided to overlap (dimensions of the store-bought repair piece lend to overlapping it)

The usual rust. Not as lucky as the doors hey?

You going to spot the overlap? Weld through primer on the overlap?

I would do the top bit especially bolted to the car if you want it to fit.

You’ll be painting the thing before you know it.

Hi Clay,

Yep, plug welds through the tek screw holes and some tacks on the edges - hopefully everything will end up a recognisable shape - not too offensive a difference for FB/EK fans

Well the rain appears to have set in for a few days and Saturday's forecast is for a top of 7 degrees.

Bought a new silver tarp (it was always a bit damp under the old blue one).

Considering the car was always a bit wet under the cheap blue tarp, when there was a break in the rain I thought I better check out the bench seat (which was out behind the garage under a tarp)...soaked...so I shuffled some bits in the garage and moved it in.


I'd been looking at the spare wheel door for a while but it's pretty far gone...so I picked up one of the plastic ones and a ten dollar cam lock to keep it closed. I screwed it in for now - when I get around to that area, I'll see if it can be adjusted to follow the body line...who knows, a 'real' one might turn up by then.

It used to be the scariest bit at the back - now the tailgate has got the title

I'm just avoiding getting under the car for a while - it was minus 1 last night and the sun doesn't hit the EK until noon.


...so, I've been playing with the mudguards a bit...patched, welded, puttied, sanded & painted. Close enough to the right shape for my purposes but I may have another look down the track

... they are now rattle-can flat black
