muffler turned up today - ticks most boxes - Australian made - passes the weight test - comes with clamps

the new brake drums turned up today ... put them on - along with a set of standard size shoes I had as spares
(I'm happier with this than with the machined drums and oversized shoes that they don't bother to radius)
should have read the posts and found out that these EH drums fit before I went the other way

Dunno about blackening the exhaust, but if you paint those new brake drums red it's good for 25bhp

thanks Harv, I painted my wheels red for that reason ... I didn't realise it worked on parts that you don't see. I'll do some tests down the track - I'll start with the outsides. Patrick

Yeh you have to be a ble to see them to get the full hp boost. Such minded crew like splatts. Ooh whoops nearly wet myself.

decided to buy a couple of square metres of sound deadener for the floor ... I've had some of this stuff melt and drip/sag before but I figure it should be fine on the floor

I've been busy with other cars; but, I got out there today and put the rear end up in the air to adjust the rear brakes and handbrake.
While it was up in the air I thought I may as well connect up the chassis ears, run it in gear and have a listen. I connected 3 clips to the gearbox and the rest on the rear axle.
Are these gearboxes a bit growly?
The clip on the rear of the gearbox (front propeller shaft housing) was the loudest

A Holden crashbox should be "musical", but never growly. Does this neat device display an audio spectrum as well?

Hi Rob - It doesn't have a display...just a volume knob and a knob to switch between microphones.
okay, let's call it musical ... it was most musical towards the rear - but that could just be the different materials in that spot - I see that's just a (non replaceable?) bush in there. Are they known to wear out?

Patrick,
Yes, the rear extension housing bushings do wear out. But normally this condition can be determined visually (oil leaks, and if you push the driveshaft yoke from side to side or up and down, you can see the free play).

a couple of fiddly jobs
It took me a while to find some front anti-sway bar d mounts the right profile and for an 18mm bar. The ones I have from rares are 16mm ... thought I found some at pedders but what turned up was nothing like the picture ... so I stopped looking and these turned up
then I put the pedal stops on - the old ones were pretty mangled

only felt like tinkering today so had a look at some of the spares that came with the ute
I had an inlet/exhaust manifold soaking in penetrating oil for a couple of days but it still put up a fight ... the drill ended up doing the job of separating them and then I picked the remaining bits of the bolts out of the threads
About 1 in 10 starts the starter motor doesn't engage with the flywheel ... I'll look at that sometime, but I thought I may as well get another one ready (the ute came with a couple of spares so I had a look at them and choose the best one)
Connected up a few wires and they both did what they were supposed to do
One had been sealed up better than the other but they both cleaned up okay. Still enough life in the brushes on both of them
Took the burrs off
Not quite bosch blue but it'll keep the weather off

The problem you describe with the starter is sometimes caused by excessive end-float of the armature (check the that the 7/16" AF nut on the end of the armature shaft is done up firmly, using a 9/16" spanner on the flats of the washer behind), sometimes by the pinion not sliding freely on the splines, and sometimes by good old misalignment (clean the crud off the mating surfaces where the starter bolts up to the bellhousing).
