Hi Rob, yeah my 'spares' didn't have the lock pins - so I took the pin out of the one from the car. Patrickardiesse wrote: Tue Feb 02, 2021 6:47 pm The king pin retaining cotter pin is missing on all three (yours with the excess clearance, and the two reconditioned ones).

Brett027 wrote: Tue Feb 02, 2021 6:37 pm Hi Patrick, I tried those Rares reco units too and found that the inner and outer wheel bearing mounts had been machined too much by Rares and the bearings were not a snug fit. There's ways around it, but in my case I decided to put kits through my old ones instead. If you go down that track, reamer is here if you want to borrow it. Brett

thanks Brett, I'll see how I go. Patrick
Re: Gimme 5 years
Hi Brett
so I had to know - I went out to check the fit of the bearings on the stub axles (well, just the side I'm working on now)
with the paint on the axle the bearings don't push on - paint off and all good

Re: Gimme 5 years
Great news. I might have got some duds-they looked like they'd been sitting there for a long time.

Re: Gimme 5 years
a while back someone was selling their stash of control arm nuts bolts, bushes, eccentric bushes etc so I grabbed them
bolted them up with the seals, king pins and some red bits

rainy day but I did get a bit of a chance to tidy up under the guard - took the opportunity to put the brace on while the wheel is off
got the brake shoes ready

Hi Stephen, yep, here's a close up. PatrickIn the Shed wrote: Tue Feb 02, 2021 5:54 pm Hmmm.... close but nah, thrust bearing probably collapsed.

took a few days of soaking in penetrating oil and trying various ways every now and then to get this bush out ... no particular reason for taking it out - just the sport of it
Re: Gimme 5 years
spent some time disassembling and cleaning up stuff on the passenger side of the front end and noticed a bit of play in the idler arm support ... so picked up a few more bits for when I put it back together

Re: Gimme 5 years
The idler arm support seems to be one of the things that gets the most wear.
With the steering box brace, consider putting a hole in it so you don’t have to remove it to check and top up steering oil.

Re: Gimme 5 years
bit of a slow start to the day but I did manage to put the passenger side front suspension together
then I ground down a spare spanner into a camber and castor adjusting tool
went inside and sat down with a bourbon ... but went back out to quickly check all of the front brake bits were ready

Re: Gimme 5 years
Clay’s hierarchy of king pin wheel alignment
1. Obtain maximum possible caster
Ditto:
2. Maximum camber
3. Maximum upper control arm outer pivot centre height.
Set in that order.
I don’t think it is possible to set enough of either caster or camber in these but then I do like my highway driving and hard cornering. The higher outer pivot lowers the roll height, which results in notably improved handling, so the learned RS tells us.
Nice tooling mod. My dad in laws old crescents fit without this.

What Clay said.
I bought a Trojan "stumpy" adjustable spanner, and it works a treat. But the ground-down open-end spanner looks like a proper person's tool.
