Re: Are you Bored? Bang for Buck Engine recipe required.
The cam in my Grey powered HAMBster is about the same as a GTR XU1 grind. The standard cam was ground because no cam billets were available. It has survived probably 3-400 passes down the 'strip. I think it was done by Camtech in 2010.
Re: Are you Bored? Bang for Buck Engine recipe required.
I love the sound of an XU1, they sound just a touch angry.
I am heading back home soon from work and I will ring David at Galloways to see how my Head is going and also see if the Crow 846 Cam has arrived.
I do not have the Cam Specs at the moment but I feel the Crow 846 is somewhere between a Cam-tech 639-108 and a Cam-tech 609.
I am thinking that I would like the Rev Range to be a bit lower for drivability and I am aiming for 3.36 diff with the Opel Gearbox and 14 inch wheels.
The Timing set I have is an old New old Stock "Master" brand, made in Adelaide Cast Iron Timing Set.
This timing set has the ability to run the Cam Straight up, 2 degrees advanced or 2 degrees retarded.
I intend to run the Cam 2 degrees advanced on the Crank keyway, I am not going to bother using a degree wheel, can`t be bothered, but I want it as street able as possible.
Anything must be better than the Standard 132 in it now which is giving me temperature issues on warm days. I am sure the back of the block is full of mud around cylinder 5 and 6 where the Temp sensor is.
Is anyone else using this Crow 846 Cam?
Anyway, I am going to source an Engine rebuild kit soon, clean up the Sand pit and get ready to throw the parts at it.
I have a couple of High Duty Head Gaskets, hopefully 1 will be enough.
If the Cam has not arrived yet I can chuck some rings and bearings at the bottom end with gay abandon and wait for the rest of the parts to arrive.
Oh, I just remembered I have to modify the FJ Front Engine Plate to fit the J Motor I have, drill some drain holes I think is all that is required.
I am not sure what to do with the Oil Pump either, any suggestions?
The J motor to me seems like it is a low mile engine which has been cared for.
There does not seem to be any High Volume Oil pumps for Grey Motors,
Do people leave them Stock? Port them??
Suck it and see I suppose.
Ed.

Re: Are you Bored? Bang for Buck Engine recipe required.
There are a couple of tweaks for grey oil pumps, you can run Holden V8 oil pump gears along with a spacer plate to allow for the additional length plus shim the relief spring to bump up the pressure a tad - there is quite a bit of info in Craig Allardyce's post on his engine rebuild.

OK thanks Blacky.
I will check that post,
Especially now in light of Harv`s most recent post.
Are all the Pumps the same through the years?
I think I have two NOS FJ pump gears, or that was what I was sold a couple of years ago.
cheers Ed.

Hi Guys,
Doing some Internet searches on Grey oil pumps have revealed that in the past some people have used different Oil Pumps in the past.
M-29 Pump or
M-23B pump from a GMC-248, 270, 302 (1939 -63)
I think the numbers a Mellings Oil pump numbers.
Does anyone have any other information?
Is this Mod reliable? It requires a little bit of modification of the Sump.

It appears the M-23B has larger gears.

Be interesting to see how much faffing around is involved in making an M-23B fit - never heard of this modification before, it might solve the problem of the ever diminishing rebuildable oil pump problem....
if you sort it out Ed make 2 , I will buy the other one off ya

I have a 235 Chev in the shed. I might have a look when I get time.
Re: Are you Bored? Bang for Buck Engine recipe required.
Yes Blacky, it would be great to buy new pumps off the shelf, especially if the were larger volume without loading up the distributor gear too much.
A deeper pan might also be an option as well so to not circulate sludge so much if not using an oil filter.
The chev pumps are not expensive might be worth Ordering one for comparison purposes.
I think the 308 gears and a spacer is an easier solution.
Is anyone making the spacers?
Cheers Ed.

Is anyone making the spacers? Wouldn't be difficult to get them laser cut - I have a contact for that
