Craig,

What you said about coolant temperature swings on warmup: My FC's got an improved head gasket and a three-row radiator core. Coming back from WA one year, I started off from Ouyen when the ambient temp was about ten degrees and saw the same thing. Coolant temp in the cylinder head went up to 90 degrees before the thermostat opened and let a "burp" of hot water through, but what replaced it was at about 40 degrees. Thermostat shut again and the cycle continued for maybe ten minutes until the temperature stabilised at the high 60s (70 deg thermostat). I wondered about a bypass system like what you've fitted. Thanks for actually doing it.

No worries Rob. It's always good to get this feedback as I sometimes wonder if at times I'm going mad with all the modifications I do when others don't seem to have an issue with theirs.

Plucking away at the tune. Todays fuel consumption figure 26mpg. Getting there.

A little reminiscing today too. It's been some 35 years since they've been together.
Ol Green and Grey sits in waiting for it's rebirth...

Well after running these Maxxis whitewalls since I've rebuilt this car I've decided to ditch them. I've struggled with steering wander since I put it on the road after the resto. I've been through the alignment, drag link, and steering box thoroughly. Everything was rebuilt back then (7000 miles). I was suss on the worm nut and steering shaft for wear but it never seemed to appear as excessive play at the pitman arm. I even stripped the box twice to recheck the shaft bearings and do a full bench adjustment with the preloads using spring scales to set the correct steering wheel turning torque.
That last few drives was enough. I ended fitting some spare wheels I had fitted with Bridgestone R623 8ply radials. I had these fitted to my EK ute and it steered really well, but I thought this may have been due to the slightly lower vehicle weight and the ute being a bit lighter in the arse end.
Well today proved its all in the tyres. It was chalk and cheese. I think the aspect ratio, sidewall height, and slight increase in width, created a sloppy tyre on the rim. The Bridgestone is about an 1" smaller in diameter, smaller in sidewall profile, and no doubt a more rigid tyre being 8 ply.
So now I'll have to work out my options with getting them whitewalled.

Interesting. Makes sense that they would steer better. Possibly the ride will be a bit harsher. There is usually a trade off somewhere.

Are those rims the same offset Craig? I see one is FB EH and the other after market or Torana.

The ride is still pretty good. No harshness noted.

Yes they are the same offset.
