Bob Hamilton is over on the FX/FJ forum if you need a contact. Imagine he would be tickled pink to know where those wheels went.

Between the other wagon, work, family etc I’ve still been managing to have a a bit of a play with Eddie.

Last time I was home I got to the point of firing it up and running off its own fuel system but a major fuel leak out the front carb main jet plug meant the glory was short lived. Managed to dig out a few spares so will have a play with it over the weekend and hopefully it will be a runner again.

Mucked around with throttle linkages getting everything to clear and get full throttle. The extractors caused me some headaches but they were the cheapest set I could find on eBay and they hit everything, intake, standard linkage setup etc… Made a false floor, chucked a moon tank, rollover valve, new PTFE lines suitable for future upgrades and got the tank in and breathing external. I’ll enclose it down the track with my long term plans but for now what I’m planning to do with it it’s compliant and safe enough.

Filled the cooling system, wire wheeled and painted the boot (polishing a turd here)and a few other bits and pieces to get it ready for Pete’s moonshine run in Feb all going well.

Unlike the other car where the level of finish has been quite high this on the other hand has been a refreshing change giving things a quick tidy up and just slowly bringing it back to life without being too concerned about it. Don’t get me wrong it’s safe enough and what I’m doing is getting done properly it’s just not pretty. Everything is starting to work as it should but it’s just been fun tinkering and getting it running again. Very much of Freiburgers mantra of “don’t get it right just get it running”.

I’ve funded most of this with unused bits off the other wagon or trading bits and pieces that came with it given the other one being the money pit it has turned into which has also been fun.

Speaking of such things, Captain Bob wanted the hinchcliffes back for MR Terrifc so I did a bit of a deal between him and Lindsay and ended up with a really cool set of wheels which I’ll talk about later but for now it’s back to steeelies.

More to follow..

Some of the best fun is where you can work on them without worrying that a dropped spanner will destroy show quality paint.

Managed to get a bit more done on Eddie over the break between family commitments etc.

End result is Eddie is running and driving and doing all the things he should be after sitting idle for 15 odd years which was a cool achievement. Taking something that was rotting away and not running in a backyard to a running driving car again (albeit still very rough) has been fun.

I had to abort the twins and reverted back to the single strommy. Front carb continuously flooded and leaked fuel everywhere no matter what I did to the float/needle seat. I’ve pulled them apart swapped them around and also pulled a spare off the parts carb so when I get time to change them back around I’ll see what the go is this time. I’ve also reverted back to the glass bowl grey motor fuel pump to see if that makes a difference although the later model fuel pumps have never caused me issues before. Body of the carb in question appears to be in good nick with no cracks I can see.

Fixed the brake leak, rebled them and they work well, swapped on the clutch master from the FB, rebled and the clutch is now not leaking and works well, tidied up some questionable wiring and fitted some replacement gauges I had for the smiths gauges they unfortunately were buggered. Also pulled all the doors apart, cleaned and lubed the mechs up and now have working interior and exterior door handles.

Still a few jobs to do, clean the interior floors (they will eventually need to be replaced) and flick some paint on them for now and give the ignition system a bit of a service (has a slight miss) and give the outside a good scrub and seal and I’ll be calling this done for now.

I wanted to make Eddie look like and old E/Stock car from back in the day so the Wife also got amongst it and did some sign writing for me. I think any excuse for a break from the kids managed to convince her to get out and contribute.

I’ll distress the lettering a bit when I clean the outside prior to sealing it up. Should turn out ok.

Pretty cool Brendon. I found your series getting the grey going on YouTube last night.

A bit more tinkering with old Eddie.

Wire wheeled, rust converted and flicked some enamel over the floors. chucked some Mexican blankets over the seats to make the cabin a bit more habitable.

Flicked some of the vintage white paint we used for the sign writing on the rear fatties to tie it all in a bit better.

Sign writing had by now had a chance to cure so we hit it with some scotchbrite to distress it a bit. Gave the whole car a good scrub and scotchbrite until the red oxide stopped coming off with the hose and then sealed it all up. Turned out ok for what it is.

Celebrated with another quick test drive up and down the driveway. The brakes bite super hard. Not sure if its a case of "Early Holden Morning Sickness" with the brakes locking up with the slightest touch of the brake pedal
or something else going on.

Eddie runs a drum brake HR front end, FB/EK rear end and a VH44 booster. All the components from the master cylinder onwards are new/refurbished including any rubber lines. Brakes are adjusted properly and when they are locking up they are also releasing as soon as you take your foot off the brake pedal. Just super harsh on the application. Not much pedal pressure at all required to have you head butting the dashboard.

Any ideas from the brains trust?

Hopefully the fronts are grabby and not the rears.

Could be the difference in bore size. HR front drum slaves are 1.06" bore. FB/EK are 1.1875".

Does it still grab if the booster vacuum line is disconnected and plugged?

From memory, when the power brakes first came out there was a warning sticker to put on the rear window alerting other drivers that increased stopping distances may be needed. Might need one of those decals

Eddie is looking good at this distance Brendon. My only suggestion on the brakes is to see if you can drive them in to shape, possibly with the booster vacuum temporarily disconnected. HR brakes being self energising, and wider on the front are bound to be more efficient than FB EK.

One of the $50 specials I owned was a HK and it used to do the same thing but I never bothered to find out what it was - it could get a bit hairy in Sydney traffic though ...

Thanks for the ideas gents. I’ll disconnect the booster over the weekend for a spin and see if it makes a difference. If not I’ll live with it and pre warn passengers so the dash and taxi rail don’t knock teeth out.

I've got some offcuts of SFI-rated rollbar padding for that tooth fairy

Thankfully took for another spin today. I’ll chalk this one up to early Holden morning sickness as I think Rob put it. The car was nosed into the shed this time so the first few brake applications were in reverse and the brakes felt really good. Once going forward the first one or 2 brake applications were a bit bitey but after that they felt really good and would only lock up if you jumped on it.

Because he’s been good I’ll treat him to a fresh set of leads and plugs and if he keeps behaving after that will get these twins back on and sorted..
