Re: Soldering... clearly I'm doing something wrong

What wattage is your iron ? I have a 100W soldering iron that is way better to use then the pissy little 15 or 25 W ones, although now my weapon of choice is my 12V Milwaukee battery iron.

I recently purchased one of those Milwaukee 12V cordless soldering irons. Best tool I've got in the last ...

Re: Val ute

Early VGs still had the 225 slant motor, until the 215 Hemi replaced it.

This ute has a 4-speed which wasn't available in a any VG, so it's most likely had an engine transplant as well.

Re: EK convertible on SBS

I'll still call BS on it being any type of "factory" convertible.

The simple facts are that the factory was flat out developing new models platforms, new (Red) motors, automatic transmissions, all-synchro manuals (3 or 4 sp), disc brakes etc. etc.

Also convertibles were not popular in Australia in ...

Re: Crankcase ventilation

The early 161 & 186 engines (pre-June 67) had no PCV either. The 186S was the first.

The best way to plumb a PCV to X2 carbies is to make 2 adapters to fit under the carbies & fit a 3/8 diameter tube to each, run these to a T-piece & then to the PCV valve.

Have a look how GM-H did it on XU1s.

Re: PITMAN SHAFT SEAL

It's a 'standard' imperial size TC seal.

1.437" is 1-7/16". So the seal is 1" x 1-7/16" x 1/4".

It will work much better if you remove the pitman shaft & polish the seal area. Many are quite rusty at this age.

Re: GTR Header

Maybe the change to the Y-pipe happened late in HD production.

Yes, the early HD's changed to the HR type rear header at engine number 186K171370.

Cheers,
Harv

Hi Guys.

I reckon the whole X2 header thing has caused more confusion over the years than just about anything else Holden.

Re: Fuel Filter

AFAIK that device is either a fuel regulator or damper. The theory was that they took the pressure & pulsation away from the needle & seat in an effort to prevent flooding & vapourisation as well as extending its life. I've seen several versions over the years.

Whether it actually worked or not is ...

Re: FAQ on tyre and rim data for FB/EKs

That 5mm difference between the hole & non-hole HR rims is spot on.

One of the oldest Holden myths was that the hole signified that they were "disc brake rims". Simply NOT TRUE.

AFAIK the HD/HR rims with the 90mm backspace (& no hole) were fitted to all HDs, plus HR commercials whether they had ...

Re: Ute/P Van front mudguard deco strip

According to the parts catalogue all FB & EK, except Special sedan & wagon have the same front guard mouldings from the factory. The part numbers are 7412661/7412662.

Could it be that many of these cars had replacement front guards in their working life (i.e. lots of prangs) & the panel shop just ...

Re: Flasher can part number

I can't find that number in any GMH parts catalogue that I have but it may be Vauxhall or GM US.

Holdens up to HR have 3-pin flasher cans, 2-pin are used from HK up to Commodore.

His v6 alternator is 85a factory

Yes, but that only leaves a maximum of 35 A available at revs. At idle it is much lower. If the engine is at idle there probably wouldn't be enough left to run a stock ignition system & keep the motor going.

If the car is modified with say an electric fuel pump ...

600 W !!! That's 50 Amps @ 12 V.

You'll need an extra alternator just to run the heater element.

Re: Crankcase ventilation

Adding a PCV valve to a Grey will have little or no effect on running fuel mixture (above idle speed).

We used to fit a lot of PCV valves at our workshop during the 70s. TRW & others made conversion kits for many common cars.

All that is required after fitting is a small adjustment of the idle ...
