Ram tubes for Stromberg carbs

Post by Harv »

Thought I’d share some bits and pieces I have been playing with (stuff I got distracted with that stopped me being distracted by the Normans that stopped me being distracted by the V8 project that stopped me doing any real work on the house while I was home  ). I’ve been tinkering with a set of triples, and got as far as wanting air filters for them. Wasn’t too impressed with the standard chrome round air filters, and would dearly have loved some finned alloy ones... until I saw the price (about $170 each from AussieSpeed). I put the idea on hold, and then got distracted playing with SUs for the Normans.

The SUs got me to thinking of ram tubes – I really like the look of a set of triple SUs with ram tubes hanging off the side of a grey. I got to wondering if I could do a similar thing with a set of downdraught Strommies.

The photos below show what I ended up with (note that the filters on the triples are only cable tied on loosely for now - need neatening up a bit):

They don't look too bad on a single Strommie either:

Looks like they will fit under the bonnet of a standard FB/grey motor without any drama (there is also a lot of meat in the bottom of the ram tube neck to cut off if clearance is a drama). The top lips of the tubes are very rounded – being alloy it would be pretty easy to file them back, even as far as to make them look like injection stacks... kinda like this:

(I like long injection stacks too, but there is only so much room under the bonnet of an FB  ).

The tube top width bellmouth (just) fits the 6” centres on my triple manifold. If your manifold is tighter (say 5” between carb centres) then they could readily be notched (or bent by hand like the injection ones above).

The tubes are made by SickSpeed:

and cost me $35 each including postage. The tubes slip on over the standard Strommie neck (where the air filter base normally clamps) and are held in place with a stainless self tapper screw (from Bunnings). The screws can be pilot drilled, easiest to do so with the carb off the car. If doing it with the carb on, dollop a blob of grease inside the carb throat to catch any filings.

The tubes are sealed at the base of the carb by using rubber oil seal O-rings (60mm OD x 57mm ID x 1.5mm thick are perfect, cost about 50c each) – I used three on each to ensure a good seal. I picked these up from eBay.

Filter socks are made by Unifilter (5/373 Manns road West Gosford NSW 2250 0243222007) and owe me $20.75 per sock. Had to ask them to custom make them, but no dramas – postage time took longer than “custom make” time.

To stop the filters being sucked in, I cut some small circles out of ZimPirate bumper bar mesh (from SuperCheap) and put some vacuum hose ofcuts around the edge. These sit on top of the tube and self centre:

Total all-up per carb is about the $60 level – about the same as the standard round chrome ones from Aussie Speed or SuperCheap.

Cheers,
Harv.
